Looking at picking up a back tension release and starting to play with that. I currently shoot a stan onnex thumb button and am wanting to dabble in the back tension. I have never shot one and curious if any one has any pointers. I will probably go with a stan being i love my onnex, but any others I should look in to

I’m no help. I’ve never tried a back tension release before. Still shooting the traditional release. What are the benefits supposed to be?

I like to see that Dialed archery sight though. My boss’s son is one of the founders of the company.

I actually have the new prüf sight on order as well. I really like the arxos so I figured I’d give the prüf a whirl.
And as for the back tension, for me it’s just something new to play with. More for my 3d league rather then a hunting situation.

When you say back tension release are you talking a hinge release?

I have been thinking of shooting one but have never went through with it. Aron Snyder from Kifaru swears by shooting and hunting with a hinge. I think he uses a Scott longhorn.

I shoot a wrist strap but I don’t squeeze the trigger with my finger.
I hook my finger over the trigger and squeeze my back to make a the shot go off.

    Deertracker,
Back tension is suppose to help with a surprise release which helps in mitigating target panic. There are some great shooters out there that can control the control release but others that will develops target panic. A couple of control shooters that are very good are Kyle Douglas and Tim Gillingham.
Developing target panic is a pain. It took me 2 years to work through it once I got it. Levi Morgan has some good videos on target panic and they helped me a bunch.

I have shot a few but never pulled the trigger on one. I still love my Carter Chocolate 3 finger thumb button too much to make a switch. I am a control shooter. I have shot this way from day one. I want to be able to decide when that arrow is getting sent. And I can do it very proficiently. I shoot rifles the same way.

As far as a back tension I would definitely make sure you get one with a safety so you don’t have to worry about accidently setting it off on the draw.

Are you talking hinge or back tension??I typically shoot a Stan SX3 thumb,3 finger,My hinge is a Scott Halo,3finger,which I like, but it doesnt have adjustable click which is nice,if you use the click, the ability to change to 2,3,or4 might be something you might like.I like mine set a little on the hotter side, but recomend a shot trainer or accubow to pratice with first as they do require some getting used to.
Now back tension Truball makes on that can be shot as thumb or back tension, but thats a different animal and I have no intrest in back tension, probably the fussiest of all releases to shoot.
Archery talk classifieds is a Great place to shop for high end release, guys are always, buying, selling and you can save alot, and if you dont like just resell it.

I was talking back tension specifically. But the more i think about it the more i ask my self why. And I don’t have a answer, so for now I will stick with my stan onnex thumb button.
I don’t struggle with target panic, I actually shoot very well, I just like to play with different set ups. I did try my wrist release not long ago and wow I can not shoot with that after using my stan the last year.
And archery talk classifieds are great, I sell alot of stuff on there as well as buy.

I’ve never shot a back tension but have always had the same curiosity and would like to try one out. I use a nock2it, which is basically a Carter wise choice thumb release. I have a feeling I’d be a better shooter if I trained with a back tension. Hunting with one sounds risky, though (surprise release not ideal)

Yep pulling into the wall might give you that suprise release ,you didnt want, when that big buck comes in.
I will stick to thumb or index for hunting.Alot of guys use a hinge, but for me i would have to set mine a little colder. All releases work on command, just some use less of a consious effort.I use the release I have because it gives me a good comfortable, solid anchor and I shoot well with it.
Like Bearcat said you gotta try differet things, part of the fun of archery, and maybe you will find your silver bullet!!

IMO back tensions are great for league shooting but not great for hunting, I’ve used back tension while hunting(turkey, elk) but if you have a rutted up buck moving thru its nice to pull the trigger when you need to..

I agree. I wouldn’t be hunting with one just target shooting maybe leagues. At this very moment it’s more of a idea in back of my head. I only hunt with my stan and I won’t be changing that any time soon.

Another forum that has a very good classified section is on Rokslide.

Never heard of it. Thanks for the heads up. I wasn’t sure about archery talk at first but just in the last 2 weeks I’ve sold and bought quite a few things. Including stuff that peaked no interest here.

Rokslide is more of a western hunting forum but it has grew to have a fair amount of eastern hunting on it as well.
