I had an area at home that was just overgrown weeds. For some reason this year it got loaded with thistle. I HATE THISTLE So I mowed it down earlier this summer, hit it with glyphosate twice then disced it up. Sunday I planted it into winter rye and ladino clover. The rye should be a good food source this fall well into winter, then pop back up in early spring, all the while keeping weeds at bay while the clover establishes. Then next summer I will mow off the mature rye and should have a nice clover plot for 4-5 years.
Along the edge of the plot are some new chestnut crab apples I planted from seed this winter and just transplanted out to this area a couple weeks ago. They are 12-18″ tall already and taking to the new home quite well.
I can see this plot from the house and it does get deer passing thru it quite often, so this should keep them around more often for our viewing pleasure.
