New MN DNR Married Fishing License changes are a joke!

As it’s been discussed in an earlier thread, the fact that BOTH of you need to be present with your drivers licenses when getting the license is a hassle & a joke, but then if you buy a duplicate copy (I keep 1 in my wallet and a duplicate copy in my boat) you only get a duplicate of your license, not both…..

So was this whole change all about getting an extra $2.50 for the extra duplicate? WTF!

Could you pay another $2.50 for a duplicate of the spouse’s license too? I don’t get duplicates so I wasn’t aware of this.

The change was due to the fact that there is a law regarding not allowing persons to purchase licenses if they have outstanding alimony or child support I believe was stated somewhere. This requires the SSN within their system.
I get my licenses online and had all the necessary information since my wife’s SSN was already in the system.
Its a hassle yes, but if its for the reasons I mentioned above I understand it.

I’d say that is not sufficient reason for the change, as it is not even addressing the supposed issue (deadbeat parents not paying). It just makes people violating their divorce/court settlement, more likely to violate another law, fishing without a license.

Since my wife rarely, if ever, fishes, I just bought a solo license for the first time in 6 years of marriage. Let them reap what they sow imo.

I tried to get the married fishing license online this year and it couldn’t pull up any info for my wife. It said she needed to call or go in person to get added to the system. She doesn’t fish but I have always bought the combination license just in case. It wasn’t worth the hassle so I just bought an individual license. I’d be curious to find out how much revenue they lose with people in my situation doing the same thing and saving $15. Maybe they make up for it and more with duplicates etc. I guess it’s not my problem to deal with.

I bought a solo also because I needed a license for the last week or so on ice. My wife wasn’t available and when she found out I didn’t get combined she was flame

Bought a combo sportsmans license without my wife there. They give you a voucher for her to go in and get one from any license vendor. Was actually pretty easy and a lot less of a hassle than trying to get the 2 of us in a store at the same time.

Took me 5 minutes to buy my MN non resident family license online. Not sure what the big fuss is about. All you need is your wife’s SSN and DOB.

When my son is born I’m buying him lifetime licenses in both states, to save him the future hassle of having to navigate changes to license regs. Hopefully he appreciates it one day!

There is ZERO reason the DNR needs your SS#. Fishing Licence sales is NOT the intended use of a SS#.

I was annoyed but it took about 5 minutes for my wife and I to go into Holiday and buy the license.

This has always been a law, regardless how you bought the license. They need your SSN either way, in person or not. Usually you give it to them the first time you buy and they never ask for it since.

I think the change is dumb myself as it literally does nothing…so I just bought mine online.

But here’s were I get pizzed…the MN DNR online system is so outdate and actually misleading. They claim you can purchase certain things online, which many believe it’s an instant purchase…not true with turkey and deer at least. I know serval, especially out of state hunters, that got burned.

Just make is 100% online (meaning you can do everything online is you choose) like MO and many other states do!

The DNR needs it because the legislators passed a law requiring it. That’s the reason.
It also ties into the “Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact” in which 48 states participate.

You had to provide your SSN for years now, I don’t remember when that started, but you had to provide it one time, and then you’re done. It’ll be the same for the mrs.

Most of the married licenses are just to keep an extra limit anyways.

My wife and I got our married fishing licenses online like we always do and we didn’t think it was any big deal at all.
I don’t understand the reason for the complaints.

The thread was specifically about getting an in-person license at say a Fleetfarm and how the Married licenses are now individual vs combined.

Literally takes less then 3 minutes in the store.
I dont think there is to many excuses why you can’t walk in for the 2 minutes. Or be smart and just buy your own. Then saving 5 dollars wasn’t worth all the complaining

The complaining is because us Law abiding citizens keep getting more rules pushed down our throats because others do not follow the rules.

Same here! I save a copy to my phone and then print off about 10 copies.. One in the truck, one in the boat, one in my tackle bag, one in my BWCA pack, one in my hunting bag (sportsman license), one in my hunting vest, etc.

X2. My wife took the voucher in a week or so later and got Hers. Kind of silly – Big hassle – No

I think they should collect the child support and alimony at the ballot box… targeting honest fisher people seems like a dipnet…. I say throw the trawlers out.

The bigger issue is people that buy licenses at a gas station. All I want is to get my coffee and GTHO. Then some dude decides that at 0745 on a Tuesday morning he needs a license. C’mon Bro!

They don’t sell licenses at Starbucks Matt! We all know you only drink latte’s, usually iced, or Pumpkin Spice in the fall when feeling saucy. mrgreen
