5 acre parcel hilly with damp pockets. Heavily wooded with mature hardwood’s predominantly maple. Almost zero undergrowth, obviously shaded all day. Is there a durable full shade ground cover that will attract deer? Thanks in advance. Around Rhinelander, WI.

No. Sorry, but that’s pretty much the short answer as far as ground crops that can be seed-planted and that are attractive to deer.

In addition, some hardwood trees create soil conditions that actively prevent understory growth.

Gotcha, I know I’ve got to think outside the box on this one. I recall a conversation a few years back about a member here complaining about deer in his hostas. I have acces to some that I can split off and transplant and might give that a try. They don’t seem to mind the shade.

I’ve been thinking about this for a small upland piece at our place up north too. You good with a chainsaw? May need some forestry management to clear enough trees to allow more light underneath the canopy. If done right, lots of things will take to growing that will attract deer and other wildlife. The WI DNR may have someone that would be able to take a look at the property and give you suggestions. You could try calling them.
