New Glarus Spotted Cow

Carole and I spend the week in Ike’s Peak campground in NE Iowa just across the river from Prairie du Chien, WI. On Weds we took time to trek over to New Glarus, WI to tour the brewery and, of course, sample some suds. What a mecca that area is. We did the self-guided walk-thru tour and found plenty of employees offering more specific information as we went thru the brewery. We had a great time.

Of course Carole got her Spotted Cow before getting back into Iowa, but I sort of stuck on the Bubbler and Nearly Naked beers and brought home, well, plenty. The Serendipity was an apple/berry beer that had lots of carbonation and was plenty sweet, but at $10.00 per 25 ounce bottle I left that on the store shelf.

Anyone looking for a fun place to visit, this brewery is a great one. Lots of history found there as well as all thru the town. And we found a nice bar that was serving Prime Rib sandwiches and had a late lunch there. Dinner was never a consideration after that meal. From the campground/State Park it was merely two hours all the while winding thru some of the prettiest country-side I’ve seen in a while.

We’ll definitely be doing this little jaunty again.

Recently tried the New Glarus Moon Man. Lightly carbed, smooth taste, fruity smell. Will buy again!

That’s sounds really nice, Tom. I’ve heard good things about their facility and grounds and would like to make that same trip myself.

New Glarus does not make a bad beer – they may not all be your style or preference but the execution is top notch. Moon Man and Spotted Cow in 12pk cans is great, Two Women is my favorite year round they make and if you ever run across his coffee stout, I would highly recommend it.

X2 on the moon man. One of my favorites, my brother brings me some every time he comes back to visit!

Always pick up at least a sixer when going through Wisconsin!

Good tip on stopping there sometime…. there are a lot of cool towns in that part of the state.

On the Spotted Cow and such… gas stations along the freeway by just north of the Il border sell a load of it to folks heading back into IL.

Cold beer sounds good about now. Haven’t tried the spotted cow yet but moon man was fantastic. Haven’t found it in the liquor stores around my house. Anyone find it in the twin cities?

It’s not sold outside of WI.

All of the New Glarus beers are marketed/sold only in Wisconsin, Mike. Gotta cross the border to purchase it….legally. I think a Twin Cities liquor store or bar was caught selling it illegally a couple years or so ago but I never heard what came of the event.

I was amazed at the full line of beers that the company makes. The moon man is a bit “hoppy” for Ma but I didn’t mind it. The Barely Naked and Bubbler are both lagers and similar to a Miller light or maybe Coors light…easy to drink. Spotted Cow is somewhere in between.

If you are into a lot of the beers that you can’t get in MN it’s definitely worth a trip to Casanova liquor store in Hudson. It’s in an odd spot (up the hill from the DQ by the river). The folks in there really love talking about beer and can usually find you something fun that isn’t easy to find. They also do growler fills if you bring one!

There’s a huge liquor warehouse just off I90 in La Crosse, too, that has about every odd named brew on this planet. Doe-in-heat, buck-in-rut….names like that.

Many years ago when I lived in Madison we’d make excursions around the state and New Glarus was of many small communities worth visiting and learning the history and local culture. A lot of those early settlements with German or Scandinavian origins.
I never cared for Spotted Cow as it is a weiss beer which I have no taste for. Perhaps when given the chance I might try Moon Man since I always favor “hoppy” ales.

New Glarus at one time ran a spring beer called hoppilicous (spelling?) that was great. When over to Center City to visit mom I have a standing order to bring back a couple extra cases of Spotted Cow back to iowa. Easy run over to St. Croix Falls

Maybe confused? Hopalicious is an APA brewed by Ale Asylum in Madison WI and only distributed in Wisconsin. I have had it many times.

We didn’t see any mention of this at the brewery and its history so I think Mr. Cox is right.

Mmmmm Spotted Cow, New Glarus is awesome beer. I always wondered about the out of state sales issue. We also love Keweenaw brewery out of the U.P. and they sell Widowmaker in this area (northern Wisconsin) Try it, its an awesome beer!
