New Concrete Driveway – Sealing It

I did a quick search on here and didnt find any discussions within the past 10yrs. We had a new concrete driveway put in a few weeks ago and I’m hearing that I should seal it over the summer or at least before winter.

Anyone have a recommendation of a product or brand to use? Prefer asking here rather than going somewhere they will only recommend whatever they want to sell ( I do fall for that at the bait shop though when I ask what are they biting on ) )

    Thanks

I like to use a cure and seal, either Cemstome brand, or Brock white.

My Concrete guy did it for me not sure what brand he used. Did use one of those plastic pump up and spray weed sprayers. Maybe call and ask your guy if he already did.

He didnt seal mine, said it needed cure time. He mentioned a Thompsons seal with a sprayer. Im just checking around here for those that may have done it

I think there are better products than Thompsons. What they put on mine was a white liquid. Wish I could tell you what is was.

That’s strange – I have no idea if it was wrong or right, but the guy who did my driveway poured it in the morning and came back and sealed it late afternoon. (It held up to foot traffic without issue at that point)

That was 9 days ago, we will start driving on it tomorrow. Looks great and definitely has sealed, glazed appearance.

Maybe some types of seals can be applied earlier? I know there’s a lot of smart people, including some concrete dudes on here that can probably answer. I’d like to know when the next time I should seal mine should be as well.

There is sealer and curing compound. When concrete is poured a curing compound is sprayed on top to prevent surface evaporation to prevent spider cracks and curing to soon. A sealer cannot be applied until after the concrete has cured for 28 days. I would suggest a non yellowing sealer either Wr meadows or TK. You will have to roll it or spray it with a airless sprayer. If you use a pump sprayer it will have lines in it when it gets wet. Clean the concrete and let it dry before applying the sealer. I would not suggest applying heavy sealer every year because it can build layers it will start to yellow if it is applied to often. Good luck.

I just talked to Bearcat about sealing my garage floor that was poured today. He recommended Siloxa-Tek 8510 concrete sealer. I am not sure if it makes a difference if it is inside or outside. I am sure he will chime in.

Yes this is a good sealer for both driveways, garage floors, side walks, patios and all.

That was a cure. Not a sealer. Sealer shouldn’t be applied for 30ish days once the concrete fully cures.
And you can redo it ever other year or ever few years depending on the product

Thanks Bearcat! Will follow this advice and reccomendation on sealer brand. Since it’s new, will a good spray down with a garden hose be a good enough wash before I seal it? I don’t currently have a pressure washer.

You can pressure wash after that same time frame. Just do not use alot of pressure. You will streak the driveway and it will be ugly. A good sweeping, wash with hose and blow off with leaf blower. Then seal

Different companies make an adapter for your pressure washer that is made for concrete and wood decks. It is approximately 12 to 14 inches in diameter and has 2 angled nozzles under a plastic housing. You attach it to your pressure washer gun and just move it around on the surface. As long as you keep it moving you have no streaks. I’ve only used on wood decks but it works great. I would think on concrete it would be perfect. It is much faster than just using the pressure gun with a fan nozzle.

Agreed but new concrete that hasn’t been sealed compared to old concrete that has been is 2 very different things

Every concrete project I’ve had someone do, they came back within a day and sealed it. Should be part of the job.

As noted before you can not seal concrete until the cure cycle has completed which 28 days. What they are putting on is a curing compound which should be applied as soon as possible without leaving marks. Many people are confused that what the contractor is putting on is a sealer. Or should I say installers too. The product might say cure and seal but the seal is such a light weight that it will only last during the curing process. You can contract companies to seal your concrete but it can only be done 28 days later.
