Network 858 with new Helix 10 SI G2N?

I purchased a new Helix 10 SI G2N which I plan to mount at my counsel. My old (3-4 years old) 858 will be moved to the bow. I also bought the Ethernet hub for networking (for $270!). However, I’m reconsidering the need to network the units. The only reason I was originally considering it is so that if I marked a waypoint at the counsel mounted Helix it would automatically mark it on the bow mounted 858. How important really is that? I typically fish for bass, crappie and walleye. It seems easy enough to mark the way point on the Helix and then simply walk a few steps to the bow and mark it on the 858. However, this wouldn’t work as well if I was using Side Imaging on the Helix and drag the cursor over and marked a waypoint.

    Any thoughts?

Does your 858 have side imaging?

No. 858 does not have SI. Just DI.

Buy an Ethernet cable, do not need module to hook 2 together.
Unless you’re already linked to your TM, then that is considered a 3rd where a module is required.

I have 3 birds on my boat. I do not link the bow unit. That one is hooked to trolling motor and primarily used when in sketchy shallow water so I don’t run over a wingdam or something of the like

Right. But, since I will be using an Ethernet connection from my iPilot trolling motor to the Helix 10 I need the Ethernet hub to connect the Helix to another unit.

Yes it will share waypoints with your 8xx series. Waypoints are the only thing that’s networkable with the helix though

To answer your question about having shared wpts with the bow, there are two schools of thought.

I know an angler that doesn’t share them, any wpt on the dash unit is marking any area that looks fishy, and any wpt on his bow unit is reserved for when he actually catches a fish

The other school of thought, that i am setting up my boat for, is to share the wpts, so when idling with side imaging i can move the curser over where i want to fish, and then when i am at the bow i can see my wpts and go to specific spots. A work around for this would be to mark wpts on the dash unit, and use ipilot link to go to and spot lock on a wpt found with side imaging, this would save $ by eliminating the need for the hub

OK, I wasn’t sure if you had the ipilot. Module for sure.

However, to me shared waypoints on bow is not important at all. But I always operate boat from behind windshield and almost never from bow. So I also do not have map at bow.

Whateverbites, that is the input I was looking for. I had not considered that my iPilot can take me directly to the waypoint that I marked from the dash-mounted Helix.

If anyone wants to buy a Humminbird Ethernet hub and 10′ Ethernet cable I’m going to be posting them in the classifieds.

The older core unit will not network to the Helix unless you turn off the chirp. If the chirp is on in the Helix it wont show up in the core unit network.

Another option if you really want that waypoint on the unit connected to the trolling motor and not networked to the other two units. Is to save your waypoints to an SD card and when you get to a computer use the Humminbird PC software to combine the waypoints from both units. I do this with my son-in-law so if either of us finds a good spot we both have it. Also works good for paring down the number of waypoints for ice fishing. Those late fall spots are good but not all summer spots are.

That said I have and 858 DI, 898 SI and a Terrova networked through the hub and I like it. Store all waypoints on one unit and share them. Also share the external GPS antenna.
