Went out tonight and used a sleeker worm. Much better results. Might of waited a bit too long to set the hook. A couple had em pretty deep. Good time.

Yeah I’ve hooked some deep as well. It’s tough when they hit it on the fall and you don’t know it until you lift the rod tip up the first time. Really the only negative I’ve found with the rig.

Used the Neko most of the weekend. I used it near and in front of docks where I have skipped weightless wacky worms in the past. Worked pretty slick. Worked pretty well on the edge of the weed line, too. Need to hit Gander now that I’m starting to figure out the kind of worm body I like.

Nice! I’m really impressed with how well it works up shallow and out deep. Awful nice for a guy who doesn’t like to finesse. Sure opens up the lake a lot more! I’ve had the most success on a yum senko so far but I’m going to try the Strike King finesse worm and also a few more with a little more shape to them.

I like the 1/8oz Neko weight so i need a worm with a thicker head. Haven’t dropped shot most of the year now.

Yeah tried the finesse worm from SK today and it’s definitely too thin. Berkeley 7 inch power worms worked well though.

One good plastic for this if you can find it is the Berkley power slug-thick head, somewhat bouyant, great plastic.

I’ve been using a Yum Genie 7.5 inch worm lately. Thicker head to push the weight into. Further up the worm is a thicker egg sack too that I get an O-ring around and push the hook through the ring and egg sack. Hook-ups with the VMC Neko #1 continue to be strong, and having thicker areas to push the nail weight and hook through add to durability. Also really like the fluttering spade tail that sticks straight up, it gets bit. Price is great too!

I finally tried it out last weekend, used Zman hula sticks and a #1 Neko hook per your guys luck with them. Every bass caught was in roof of mouth, and I only lost one worm all weekend! Those zman are tough!

Just tried the new Daiwa Fat Neko worm over the weekend. Yammamoto is making these plastics for Daiwa. I was impressed.

Also….For those interested (I know this isn’t the most youtube friendly site) I’m posting a video on the Neko Rig on my channel tomorrow. I’ll make a post in the bass section on here with the link tomorrow too. It has a few things in it that I think will help people when they are learning it.

Junebug and Copperhead Genies killin’ them this week. The thicker head and egg sack seem to really help the durability too.. Maybe best of all – no panfish, or small bass pecking at it constantly like the smaller worms/Ned.

Yes, tail floats up and undulates… and is a durable plastic. I caught about 30 yesterday, nothing big but only used about a half dozen Genies.

If you want to order some for a good price right now Vimage Outdoors has them for $1.99/bag plus “Save 15% with Code: JULY +Free Shipping on Orders of $40 or More.”

You might say I have enough Genies now for the foreseeable future!

Bought a few bags tonight. Cheep. I struggle with the thinner heads on other worms. I like the 1/8 th oz. it busts through the worm especially if you catch a couple. These appear to be thicker in the head. My only problem with this technique is that they jump a lot and throw the lure. I don’t want to wait too long and gut hook them. Life is tough. I’ll figure it out. Thanks

I don’t know what hook you’re using but I switched to a #1 VMC Neko hook this year. Hook up ratio is 95% and I haven’t gut hooked one yet. I think the hook is just big enough. Majority of fish are hooked in the roof of the mouth – “right in the horn.”

X2. VMC neko hooks are great. Not a fan of their drop shot hooks but the neko’s are AWESOME. I have a great hook up ratio with them too and they are sticky as hell meaning the fish stay hooked. A lot of times I have to use plyers to get them out.

I use the VMC 2/0 wacky hooks. Guess i have to improve my skills. Look forward to trying.

I have actually devoted a ton of time chasing sm on Mille lacs this summer. I fish mainly Neko or tubes. I’ve lost on ton of fish from my knot/floro breaking. I’m currently using seagar 8lb leader, and using a palamur knot or shark knot (knot I seen Mark Zona recommend for floro on you tube) to attach my jig

I understand you can’t land every fish but I’m losing quit a few, so any help would be great

Keep trying line to line knots until you get confident with one. Uni/Uni, FG and Crazy Alberto are 3 others to consider.

Or go to a main line of non-braid and skip the line to line knot. For spinning I use 6 lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid. For baitcasting I use 8 lb Sunline Azayaka with bait marker sections – tie the lure at the end of a clear section for invisibility to the fish, but there are bright colored sections above that so you can see the line and detect bites. More uniform sink rate too than the hockey stick shaped line you get with fluorocarbon tied to braid. Also, Azayaka is most similar to Sunline Shooter – a little more memory but highly abrasion resistant to those zebra mussels on Mille Lacs.

My line to leader knot always holds it seems it always breaks at the jig or that general area

    Thanks

DO NOT use palomar with fluoro! It is great for braid but slips with fluoro. I use the Cinch Knot and have yet to have one break this year, largemouth or smallmouth. Braid to fluoro and I use 8lb as well.

Don’t know about the rest of you, but the Neko bite has officially died for me. Last two times out, not even a sniff… while wacky worms and the NRD TRD have produced..

… I’m sure the Neko will make a comeback this Fall as the fish start to transition in a few weeks..

I have noticed it as well. I’m wondering if the deeper bass are looking for more reactive baits with the hot weather we had over the past couple weeks. I’ve also noticed the dock bite has picked up quite a bit in my area. I hope they aren’t moving up to feed already. It’s too soon for that!

I definitely missed that part in my video…..didn’t even realize I didn’t do a segment on setting it up until I edited. I posted it anyway because I figured it’s easy enough to figure out how to rig it on google.
