Spent the day in southwestern NE with my good friends Chad Mayer and his FIL Tom. We tried a little fishing at Red Willow because I had such an outstanding afternoon there about 5-6 weeks ago or so, but oh how the times have changed. The water there is green in a lot of places, and I mean GREEN. We did see a couple nice cats caught, and that may be the best fishing that lake has to offer right now. We came up empty, however. Creel guy was there and shared some good info about the lake and its condition with the algae bloom. The lake is still dropping, and within the next couple of weeks, you may not be able to get in anymore. If they don’t improve the ramp in some way, it’ll be off limits to larger boats.
We decided to hit another lake we’ve never seen before, so we headed to Swanson. Real nice lake with a nice dam. Just wish the fishing would have been better. We got a couple small fish on the dam tossing jigs, but trolling produced nothing, and we didn’t see any fish landed by the slabbers either. Sure is a cool little lake in that part of the state though, so I’d be willing to give it another shot sometime.
Great, sunny day with great friends though, so we can’t complain much.
