First off, thanks to everyone who gave me their input on the electronics question I posted a while back. I decided to go with the LMS522c-GPS model. Wade looked to be out of them on his website so I had to go to Cabelas, (man he was working me to go with Humminbird) I don’t know if they make commission off of Humminbird or what? Anyway, I don’t even have it installed yet but opened it up and started reading the manual where it stated I might need updates. Does anyone out there have an easy way to explain how to get the updates to the unit??

Maybe I didn’t read well enough but it didn’t explain how to? Any help again, greatly appreciated.

Absolutley. You can take the unit to Cabelas for any upgrades. If you just bought the unit, you are probably fine. When you first boot the unit up, it will flash a version number. Check the Lowrance website to verify you are running the most recent version. If not, take the head unit to the store and they will run the update. Take like 2 minutes.

Interesting. I had no idea there were updates. Are they updating GPS data?

Are you supposed to update all lowrance gps units? I have a lms 332-c from 2005. Should that be updated?

Some of the updates added additional colors to the sonar and also allowed you to zoom in farther on the GPS. I’ve done several updates on my units over the years and they always improve the performance. If Cabela’s in LaVista won’t do the update for you I can certainly help you out.

If you go to lowrance updates you find your unit, see if there is an update, if there is, you can click on it and it will tell you in detail what the update is. If you want too run the update, download to your computer, copy it to a an sd card and put the card in the unit and it will update.

One thing to remember, when you run an update, it will set the unit back to factory settings, so you will have to change your ping speed and all that….

As long as the units accept SD cards they can be updated.

Here is a list of Lowrance’s most up to date upgrades. You can compare the Software Version to the version on your unit. Power up your unit and press menu twice, go to System Setup, and then Software Information. Compare that to the Lowrance website and if they don’t match you’ll need to update. Reminder- if you do this at home make sure you have the unit fully installed and all the wires connected (especially the bare ground wire on the GPS harness) if it’s not wired right I’ve seen units lock up in the middle of an update and they have to be sent to Lowrance to fix.

The unit is more than likely already updated to the most recent software version. I wouldn’t sweat it to much.

You can check which sofware version you have to find out if you need an upgrade. Mine is current and was purchased about 4 months ago.

And of course Read the manual!

Husker26, All good advice here. Updating software is extremely easy to do if you have a way to download off a computer on to a SD card from the Lowrance website. All of the updates have good improvements EXCEPT one. Word of caution if you fish the Mississippi River alot using a Navionics card you will be highly dissapointed in the wingdam color you get with the updates (Maybe not an a concern for you) They were turned from a grey line to a creamy color and you absolutely cannot see them on the screen while outside. Otherwise updates are great. Versions 2.1 and after are the ones that caused this. I think the latest version is 2.4. Good Luck

I looked it up and the newer version is 1.9 while my unit is 1.1. I called Cabelas and the guy told me that if it isnt broke dont fix it, and that I would also have to do an upgrade on my antenna. I guess they had alot of troubles with last years models, after they got the upgrade. So for now I am leaving it alone unless someone else out there has the same model and highly recommends it.

Switch the unit over to night vision and it will improve the wingdam visibility. I have a pair of 332c and had the same problem. Obviously they don`t consider wingdams important for navigation or fishing.

There is an update for the GPS antenna too. That should be updated BEFORE doing the software update!!!! If this is not done first you can run into trouble.

Something else I will add to what Ben is telling you is that when you do the Antenna update, if it don’t work you’ll have to send it to Lowrance and get a new Antenna. Ben helped me a while back update my units and they have changed something in the older 2000 pucks and you’ll have to get it replaced! I sent it to Lowrance and they sent me a new updated one free of charge!

Thanks for all the input! It has helped me out a ton and being so close to cabelas, I shouldn’t have any problems getting it done if needed.

I can confirm that sometimes It doesn’t all work like it is supposed to. I had updated my LGC 2000, 332 and 337 last spring. Things just did not work together very well last year and I decided to remove the updates and start over. I am not sure what I did wrong the first time, but all seemed to be well last fall.
