I am in the market for some new electronics but don’t want to spend a fortune. I would like to stay around the 4 to 500 dollar range and possibly get gps capability? Eagle or Lowrance over the Humminbird. I’m not a huge fan of the Humminbird but any suggestions?

off the top of my head, the eagle will be cheaper than low or humm… check out wade’s selections at jolly ann. im sure if hes lurking, he’ll chime in with a few options for ya.
i have a cheapo humm and couldnt be happier with it.. they have stepped up their game in the last few years. i wouldnt automatically rule them out…
March 19, 2009 at 7:09 pm #760408Now is a great time to find a deal on last years Lowrance units. You might want to see if Wade at Jolly Ann Marine has any specials. http://www.jollyannsales.com

I think that Humminbird are the easiest to operate aside fom understanding what you are looking at with side imaging, but at $500 SI is not an option. I really think that you can’t go wrong with either Lowrance or Humminbird, but if debating between color and grayscale go with the color unit you wll kick yourself later if you don’t.

I just purchased a LMS522cigps for “5-bones” at Cabelas.
I think the LMS522 would be a great unit for you.
March 19, 2009 at 9:27 pm #760469Are you looking at new or very good condition used?
I haven’t decided for sure yet, but I may be upgrading to the HD units this year. If I do, I will be getting rid of mine.

March 20, 2009 at 12:46 am #760538Get the 520 so that you can network another one with it down the road. Same price as the 522.
March 20, 2009 at 1:50 am #760574We just knocked the price down on the LMS-522C to $485 shipped. I’m not sure if it’ll beat Cabelas’ price or not but it should be awfully close with you being in Nebraska and not having to pay sales tax with a Jolly Ann purchase, and free shipping. But, whether you get it from Jolly Ann or Cabelas, that would be a great unit in that price range. They were selling for $650 not too long ago, but now they are being closed out for the new lineup. They won’t be around long, anywhere…
March 20, 2009 at 1:27 pm #760668Thank you guys for all the input, I knew this would be the place to get the best opinions Now I’m curious as to the “new lineup” Although, it’s probably gonna be quite a bit more money than what I want.
Now if money weren’t an object, which is gonna be the best unit out there under $1200.00?March 20, 2009 at 2:07 pm #760687Wow! Nice wish list, Husker26. How’s it going?
I’d stay Lowrance. Just my two cents.

March 23, 2009 at 12:35 pm #761413I would suggest selling something out of the garage and donating some plasma to get the extra couple hundred for a 997SI but if you are set on the $1200 mark, your best option is to go with the 797SI unit from ‘bird
It will make you a much more efficient angler

Zach makes a good point about the side imaging units. They are SWEET. Humminbird has some excellent units, and Lowrance is getting into the side imaging game soon as well. The new Lowrance HDS units will all be compatible with the new StructureScan™ Side-Viewing Sounder, available from Lowrance later in 2009. Lowrance also announced a new promotion to sweeten the deal. I’d suggest either the HDS-7 or I’d try to increase the price point and look at the Humminbird 997C SI.
