Well where to start???
One evening in feb. my son home from school and told me that he wanted to join the local Boy Scout troop. I was stoked to say the least. I was a boy scout as a kid and wanted my son to experience the same things I did. I was not going to push it on him though. To have him come home and ask to do it without any prodding or pushing from me was great to say the least.. Enough background info. on to the good stuff.
The camping fishing trip was set for the first weekend in March. The boys planned their meals, acitivities etc. Keep in mind this is a very young troop with all but one of the active members in 6th grade. School was getting out early and the boys were to meet up in town at 1400 to go grocery shopping. Nothing was bought for the friday night meal. The boys said they planned on catching their dinner!!
Thurs came and saw the boys meet and get groceries bought and the camp set up. I crawled into my tentcot at a 2100 thinking the boys would not be far behind . I thought wrong. You get a bunch of 11and 12 year old boys away from home at a camp and the games and giggles never stop. It was all good though.
Friday morning comes ( a bit too early for some of us). The boys got up cooked breakfast and we packed in the vehicles for the trip to the lake.
The day started off slow with a trout being caught every now and again. One of the boys caught his very first fish ever a 13″ rainbow.
As the day wore on the trout became more cooperative and All of the boys caught several fish. They each had to learn the proper way to handle a fish that was to be released. They were allowed to keep their first fish then if the second fish was releasable. They were taught the proper way to handle and release a fish they were not going to keep.
The group still ended up putting 50 fish on the stringer!!!
At about 1500 we decided to pack it in and head back for camp. Everyone then took part in the cleaning of their catch. A couple of the boys got the fire going and as evening was setting in we started to cooking the over an open fire!!
Man that was good eating.!! We ate all but 6 of the fish for dinner that night. Seems everyone was starving because noone wanted to stop fishing long enough to eat a sandwich for lunch!!
You may notice the spatula layin by the fire.. I was only allowed to stop cooking long enough to take a few pics for posterity sake. Then had to get right back to cooking the fish. also you will see there are no umm civilized eating utensils?? We let the boys eat with just their god given digits and they loved it. Only after making them swear not totell their moms we let them eat that way
The rest of the fish were packed in ice and given away to parents when the boys came Saturday afternoon. All in all it was a great trip with a great group of kids. The echoing question was when are we going again and do you think we will get in the crappie in April??….
