It wasn’t a bad Saturday though the forecast of 15 mph was a little less, about 15 mph less.
I got out on a small NE Nebraska lake and shot one large Canada after daybreak. Unfortunately the goose either got into the heavy cover behind me or coasted up into a standing field of corn 100 yards away and I did not recover it.
Eric and Zac here in the pic were a couple of college kids hunting the bank in my area. They were about 500 yards away and saw the goose go down. They offered to help find it also but no avail. They’d been out since 5 AM (2 hours before light) so I knew they were hardcore (notice the face black even).
Appreciative of their help, knowing we’ve all been there, and thinking it was stupid to compete with each other I offered to let them join me as it was just me and my lab in the boat.
I think they enjoyed hunting from a boat, especially when this Speck settled in to the decoys. Interestingly the Speck only had one leg.
I saw probably 4-500 teal migrating, a small number of geese but not many “big” ducks. We did mess up a bunch of gadwalls with some movement. Not one duck made a sound all day interestingly.
I also passed on some ducks (Woodies and Widgeon) that settled in just after shooting time (I was hoping for some Canada’s to give me a look right away and they did).
If only I shot better, my goose hunt would have been over in minutes!
(We looked for the goose three separate times, I hate leaving game. This lake has came up 6-7′ in the past few weeks and the banks are covered in standing vegetation and thick willows. I definitely tried everything to recover it)
