I will start off first with a tale of a fairly thorough tail kicking I received on Monday out at Red Willow.
Headed out to the lake about 11 monday morning with walleye on the brain. I knew it was going to be tough with the cold front that had settled in right after the last 5 days of 30+ mph winds that I think blew from every direction on the compass at one point. Needless to say the fish were scattered I was only marking an occasional fish here and there not even any decent schools of shad. I decided to try and do some trolling at various depths and speeds just to cover some water and hopefully fond some somewhat active fish. Well that didn’t work. So I figured I would slow it down a bit and do some controlled drifts with live bait on one rod and plastics onthe other. That ended up with me boating one 30″ pike, sorry no pics of that one (the wife left the camera in the truck ). well about 1530-1600 the wind died down and sun was really came out. I decided to try a bit shallower as I was starting to see some action off a point. Did not manage to get into any gators, but I did find school of white Bass that had put the feed bag on. we caught close to 20 fish in the next 30 minutes. Then the wife looked at the time and said something about kids , home from school, dinner. All that registered in my head was you mean we have to quit fishing? But the they are just turning on . I lost that argument and we headed home. Fast forward………. to today
11 OCT
I had a couple of hours to kill so I thought I would hed over to a little sandpit next to the house and give it a try. I have been meaning to fish for a while, but always loaded up the big boat and headed to bigger lakes. I loaded up the Kayak in the back of the Truck and away I went. I sat there stumped for a minute thinking man how was I going to fish this new lake with no trolling motor, no fish finders, no gps, not even a contour map of the lake to look at I had my kayak two rods and as much tackle as I could stuff into my tackle bag. After a second I settled on a carolina rig for one rod and smaller finesse type lure for the other, launched the boat and away I went. I started the smaller jig and working it. I managed to catch quite a few smaller LMB, some some really nice gills(going back after them through the ice this year), One crappie and a snapping turtle. Note to all other that may have the Bright Idea of bring a snapper into a kayak as a good idea because you really want that lure back. Cut the line and let the turtle go. He almost claimed the kayak too. nuff about the turtle. I decided to try and do some deep cranking along the weed edges. BIngo. Baby. I ended up with 7 more LMBs’ between 15 and 19 1/2″. this one here is the biggest I caught today. I tried to get a pic of him in the bottom of the kayak on the tape measure, but that almost cost me a rod and reel(another story). All in all not a bad couple of days had some great fun as I have not been able to make it out much here lately. Oh yeah the water temp at Red Willow was 65 pretty much across the whole lake. Clarity was crap!!!!
Hope you had a great read.
