The Weigand area of Lewis & Clark took some hits this past Saturday (Pic from Yankton Paper).

I have not seen this verified in print but have heard from friends of people that were there:

Country Jim’s boat storage took a hit

Weigand Marina docks are basically gone, boats thrown out on ground

    Weigand’s Maintenance shed is gone

Brother of one of our docs family was camping there and tried to get to the camp showers and their Suburban was moved 15′ off the ground (everyone ok)

My in-laws built a house on the bluff overlooking the lake on the South Dakota side. They also have a boat in which they can see from their house at the Lewis and Clark Marina. Here is a picture from yesterday about 6:00 taken from near their house.

Here is the email that I got this morning.

“Here is a picture of the tornado I was dodging yesterday at Lewis and Clark lake. You can see our marina in foreground. Lou and I were driving across the dam (just right of the marina) heading for cover, not taking this picture. It was and awesome sight! Luckily no injuries were reported. Damage to dozens of houses on the South Dakota side, Wiegand Marina on the Nebraska side (where the twister just came from in this picture) had major damage. Several camper trailers were turned over, and we saw a pickup truck bed out in the middle of a front yard.”

Thanks for the pics. That area gets some wild weather for sure.

Stay in touch, we’ll have to try and duck hunt this year sometime.

For sure. If I get some more pics, I’ll get them posted. The wife is going to be down there this weekend sailing, but I can’t make the trip. I personally don’t like sailing because they won’t let me fish from the sailboat. Since they don’t let me troll off the sailboat, maybe we could hook up for a walleye or a beer sometime.

I’ll definately be down there duck hunting this year again.

    Jason,

Can you ask your family if there was much damage to the Park on the SD side? I’ll have my wife and children there in 3 weeks for a few nights stay. We’re hoping everything is still intact. Thanks!

I sent my father in-law an email. I think that the park missed the storm, but I’ll find out for sure. From what it sounded like when we were on the phone that it came across just west of Gavin’s Point. If I remember correctly, that would be a bit west of the campground. It would be over by the boy scout camp. I’ll let you know for sure.

Wade, here is the response that I got from my father in-law concerning the park on the South Dakota Side.

“As I was watching it come across the lake I wasn’t feeling so good, it looked like we were going to take a direct hit. The tornado was just east of the boyscout camp. There are three areas, where the marinas at is called the Yankton unit, then there is Midway, and about three miles west of the marina is the Gavin’s unit. The boyscout camp is about 2 miles west of the Gavin’s unit. It came ashore on the west end of the Gavin’s unit with little to no damage to the park area on the SD camping side. It when through the archery range with only a couple of trees down. It bounced up and down as it worked it’s way north through the trees hitting several homes and came out on hwy 52 right after the big curve hitting 6 homes all in a row. Because of the rain we didn’t get up into the horse trails this weekend, there could be some trees down up there.

I think camping will be ok on the SD side, it hit the marina in wygone and camp area in NE, sinking boats. I don’t have any pictures of that marina yet.

By the way, you are the coolest son-inlaw a guy could ever ask for.”

Ok, Ok, I added the last sentence, but it sounds like camping should be just fine for you in 3 weeks. Sounds like motoring over to Wiegand to fish the new structure in the marina may not be such a bad idea. I’m glad no one got hurt.

Crazy stuff. Sure am glad nobody was hurt. I hope this isn’t the begining of a long tornado season for us here in the midwest.

    Wade,
I hadn’t heard of any major damage to the parks on the SD side. I’ll be in my Yankton office tomorrow. I’ll ask my secretary who lives just North of the Marina a couple miles about it and post back. I’m sure the paper up there will have info also.

Talked to a guy that saw 2 of the tornadoes when they hit the lake. He said a column of water shot up into the air. Unbelievable sight according to him.

I haven’t been up there personally however.

    Wade, (or anybody else interested)
I talked to my secretary, and then across the dam today. She said the Marina and the parks on the SD side are fine and she had not heard of any temporary closings. She was surprised when I told her Weigand was closed. So I would think your camping trip should be fine.

    Jason and JD,

Thanks guys! I got an email back from the campground too. They said it missed them and all is well.
