Water Level at Harlan

Just checked the NOAA website for river flow information along the Republican as a result of all of this rain. The river at McCook is over 9ft and above flood stage. It is predicted to be over 11 ft at Orleans by tomorrow. This will undoubtedly help the overall water level at Harlan. The lake is already up around 6ft from this winters low mark. I fished the lake last Tuesday during the weekly Harlan Anglers League and the lake has definetely changed from what it has been the last five years. Most of the vegitation that was within 300 yds of the waters edge is now completely submerged. We caught some fish shallow so I can only assume that the ‘eyes have already moved into this new habitat and will continue as the summer moves along.

    BSfishman,
are you the same guy that wouldn’t take a picture of your tournament partner, when he (aka your brother) caught the biggest walleye of his fishing lifetime . Shame on you, it’s a good thing other tournament anglers saw it or we might have to think you really are the “BSfishman”. HAHAHAHA

I’m surprised you were even able to get it into your net

I was little ticked off that he caught that fish when he did, only keeper he put in the boat we had to throw it back. To be honest, I never even looked at the fish again after I got it in the net.
Steve and Donna Snyder won the league last week with one 7+ pounder. Only three keepers caught between seven boats.

Guys, Im a bit lost here. Why did he have to throw it back?? And how big was it?? If it was in a tourney, it would be sad.

BSfishman, really good to hear the lake is coming back up. It was fairly sad looking during the Governors Cup last year. Let it rain!! Its been dumping in Lincoln all day.

Lance, that is correct my brother had caught that fish during the State Farm Open two weeks ago up at Sherman. Problem was that we had already weighed our two over 22 inches when caught that 30 incher. Thus, we had to throw 9-10 pounds back into the water.

    Lance,
The great Sherman Legend goes something like this. Bsfishman and his brother were fishing the State Farm Open walleye tournament. On day one they had caught a 28 7/8″ walleye about mid-morning. Since they were concerned about the fish living they brought the piggy to the scale trailer and weighed it in. A couple hours later they had caught a 26″ walleye, concerned for its well being they brought it to the scales also. Now they have their two fish over 22″ in one day weighed in. So naturally one of them had to catch a monster, and that is exactly what happened. Story has it, the next fish they caught was well over 30″, since they had their 2 over 22″ they had to release it . The funny part of the story, if you know these two brothers, is that bsfishman was so shook up he wouldn’t take a picture of his brother with the “beast” . I don’t blame fishman, the brother has more trophy’s than most of us can shake a stick at . The truly sad part is that fish could have been worth a large chunk of change, and these two guys are definately deserving of such a payout.

I offered to take a pic of that fish for them. But the captain of that boat was a little tied up with a trolling motor issue….

I’m waiting for Pillager to chime in here. Something about $1000, Misery Point, and him still not talking to me.

LuvEyes, nice picture. Should be lots of those size fish in there for the next couple of years with all this water.

Shermanater, Is this the lesson learned about the rubber net story?

Thanks for catching me up guys. That would be very difficult to have to do! Man, there was a lot of large (assuming females) coming out of that tourney. Thats great! Ive always done good with smaller eyes, but never caught a hefty one at Sherman. Must be putting on the feed bags after the spawn. Thanks again for the explanations, what a sad sad release. Throwing a 30″er back in a tourney would be tough.

I don’t know if it’s so much the rubber net theory, as the shock at how big and how quick it came to the boat. Or it could be how BAD my partner had it hooked .

I didn’t try, but I saw some other folks were there giving it a shot.

I sure hope Harlan is filling. I can’t imagine it, but I sure hope so.

If any of you get to Harlan and she’s rising mightily, I want to see the first pic of water WEST of the Alma hwy. As recently as the mid-90’s I was running an 18′ ProV up the Republican 7-8 miles to catch cats and whiteys. Yup, wayyyy past the car bodies.
