I just had a the opportunity to see 3 whooping cranes yesterday on the way to work .This is the third time in my life to see them the other 2 times were in western Ks .I was pretty up close this time they came out of a meadow by the house and flew over me at about 25 ft .Pretty cool looking birds.

Actually I called the state Game and Parks .They Hadn’t heard or seen anything of them yet this spring. They were pretty interested and were going to check it out.Didn’t see them around this morning but didn’t have a lot of time to go searching. They are a lot more worried about them in the fall when some morons mistake them for geese or other birds or think if if it flies it dies.Hope thay stick around I may go look around a little on Sunday.Lots of sandhills and a few snow geese starting to show.

I’m sure I’ll see my share of sandhills the next 48 hours .I have to take the daughter to GI to a gymnastics tournament. So I’ll see quite a few miles of the platte valley this weekend.

They are real thick down here near Overton, too. I’ve seen more geese this year in the fields near my house than I can remember seeing before. Lots and lots of them with some cranes mixed in.

I haven’t been out to see the cranes in years. My dad and I used to go around G.I. all the time. Never seen a whooper though. If the ice doesn’t leave soon I my have to take the wife out there for a day of back road bird watching.
