Went down to Med Creek this weekend to duck hunt. There wasn’t much bird activity but wow is that a nice lake and public area. I had never been there but will go back, especially to fish! I just kinda had it in my mind with the drought it was problably about empty, actually it’s in good shape and coming up I’m told. I think we shared the lake with about 300 deer hunters, it was wild watching all the trucks come across the dam in the dark. My skin was actually crawling from worrying about an errant slug though because of all the orange moving around the lake.

Medicine Creek / SW Reservoir Sampling Info

That info looks awesome and as I understand it the summer topwater fishing for whiteys and wipers is unbelievable. Also a great population of channels and flatheads. The largemouth fishing is pretty good and fair to good for crappies and bluegills. The walleyes seem to struggle there for the most part.

definitely have to go back for fishing in 07!

Yes it’s a nice lake.Lot’s of fish and some decent ones but it’s not a truly awesome fishery. We used to fish it all the time and caught lots of small fish and some nice cats. Most of the lakes just across the border in Ks and Harlan and McConaughey have all been a lot better for me.If you go have fun there are almost always fish around the dam and the spillway area.As the water goes down there are some good limestone rocks in front of the spillway. There is also a good island out in front of I think it is lime creek. There used to be a water pump on top of this island so watch out if the water is starting to go down.Slabs always worked good for us in the summer.I’ve also caught a lot of fish trolling hot n tots and mepps spinners on bottom bouncers around the island and any good drop off. This lake looks good in the spring drops like crazy as they irrigate through the summer and refills decent through the winter.

Thanks for the info. It’s sure a pretty place. I grew up on Harlan and just never got over there. Sometimes it’s neat to go someplace new.

If you are interested in something different .Drop me a line sometime.I live on the north shore of McConaughey and work in Oshkosh.Doesn’t get a lot better than this .Best lake in the state and work in the Goose Capital .I can almost see my goose pit from work.

You bet sharkbait. I love Mac, one of my favorite lakes. You guys getting into the geese yet very good?

I just set up a 18′ Alaskan with a Beavertail blind if you ever want to do some boat hunting.

I grew up pit hunting at Harlan and Kirwin and we’d draw peas for spots on the flats on Harlan.

I got out of waterfowling in the mid-90’s and am just now getting back into it. It’s amazing how much the decoys have changed.

I’ll have to look you up next time I’m fishing out there too.

You are right there, Sharkbait . M.C. is a nice lake but if I am going to spend time in S.W. NE I am going to spend it on R.W. or Swanson or Enders. 3 GREAT lakes to fish!!!

You guys have it made in SW Nebraska. NE Nebraska is the worst part of the midwest to live in to fish.

The story is there are still some walleye being caught on the lake.Ducks seem to be coming good around the lake and at Lewellen. Some ducks and geese around Oshkosh. The big flights of geese seem to be really coming in around Lisco.Hunting just gets better as the cool nights freeze the Crescent lakes refuge to our north.

    Shark,

any special regs at Mac to hunt from a boat? Are there many permanent blinds around the lake?

Glad to hear ducks are moving in!

The lake is like the others in Nebraska about staying away from occupied homes and campsites. The west end has a bunch of blinds that are built by different people each season but they are first come first serve deals.Might make someone a little pissed off if they lose their blind for the day.Lots of spots along the river at the west end.If you brought a boat out I would come out a day early and check things out on a good place to launch.
