How’d you guys do on Pheasants?

I shot a couple on saturday, nothing special. Lots of corn in around my field and a brother in law had been there before me. Too warm for the dogs. Guys are telling me it was a tough wknd here in NE Nebraska. Personally, I think it’s because of all the corn in yet.

Some of the crew went up around Akron, we have some ideal areas to hunt, you are right about the corn, there still is a bunch out there. I think if you can find water, you might be better off. I know the first week I usually skip, but I will run my dog a bit sometime midweek and see what happens. Oh yeah, in 2 hours of walking, 2 guys & 2 dogs pushed out 2 roosters too far out to shoot.

Walked till nearly noon on Saturday and didn’t fire a shot. Hunting near standing corn.

Sunday, hunted another piece in the area, but where the corn came out on Saturday. Had my limit shot, cleaned and in the freezer by 10 AM. Standing corn is the whole key right now.

My theory is the more corn in the first two weekends the better!!! If birds get thru the first few weeks hunting usually settles down.

Got 2/3 of my limit Sunday morning. I had to work on Sat but my dad and brothers saw a bunch of birds but they were really flighty and headed strait for standing corn. LOTS OF CORN still in the field here in central NE and that is great for the hunting in December!!!

Worst opening weekend I’ve ever been through, got the only 2 i had a shot at all weekend. WAY TO MUCH corn left here, loads of birds but i the corn. I agree though, should make the good hunting spread throughout the season instead of the first month only…

I only hunted one CRP (short grass, brome mainly) and a little marsh roosting area.

My bro in law had beat me to the CRP and had shot one then drove around in the field…. so I didn’t expect much. We boosted out about 18-20 hens and 7-8 roosters – very poor %. I had one shot, got it, the other two with me should of had 5-6 easily and got one. The other spot had about 25 birds, maybe 5 roosters.

Either there are a lot of VERY young hen appearing roosters or that was the worst percentage of hens I’ve saw in a long time on the opener. As the week has went on I’ve heard over and over that “it’s all hens”. So I’m betting on young, late hatch Rudy’s.

Good to get out. Have to hit it again on Saturday.

One of the fields Sunday morning had 16 hens and 2 cocks and I don’t think that we were dealing with juvy cocks .
