Went out the the Sutherland inlet the last couple of nights and have done pretty good. Monday night I was on a good bite until I went to set the hook on a nice white and my brand new 6’6′ St. Croix exploded on the set. I thought I had died and then I knew I was going to have to change my pants!!
Last night the bite was a little slower, probably because of the cold front that came through, but the fish were still catchable. I was throwing an 1/8th oz Char/White maribou jig out into the current and jigging it about 2′ below the surface into the slack water. Most of my strikes came just as I entered the transition between the faster water and the slack water. Also, I would say 80% of my strikes came just after a slack line pause. The males that I caught were milking a little but I would say they are still a few days away form an all-out spawn.
I have heard that Maloney is almost full so with all of the water coming into Sutherland right now, once they stop letting water out, it shouldn’t take long to get the water lavel back up to where it was a few weeks ago. When that happens, those big whites should move up into the inlet and that is when it really gets fun!!!
