I have had some hit and miss bass action this week at some pits around Kearney. Not sure of the exact temp, but the water still seems colder than I thought it would be. Anybody else having any luck anywhere?

I don’t know if you’re like some of my friends, and I’ve fallen into saying it a few times, but we need to forget about last year. We were spoiled with a nice mild winter and the water at this time last year was in the mid 60s. Right now it’s getting close to the mid 50s in the pits I would guess. I heard 57 at a local lake today, so it’s getting there. Definitely behind last year, no doubt about that.
I say we need to forget about last year because I think it’ll force us to get better. I know all the usual stuff I’m usually doing now is NOT working for me at all. It’s forcing me to try new things, and some have worked, some not so much. I do think it’ll turn on though, and turn on quick.

I agree Brian! In fact, I may be alone, but I believe last spring was more “atypical” than this spring. Most of the time we have wild swings in weather in springtime Nebraska and that makes the fishing notoriously tough. Last year was so exceptionally warm, so early, and in the spring warming weather definitely makes the fishing easier.
I like to say that every year is different and to be successful at catching fish you always have to adapt and adjust. Sure, past experiences help and they can give you an idea of where to start, what to use, etc., but then you have to move on from there. Conditions are always changing and the fish are always adapting to those conditions. To catch fish you have to adapt and adjust too. That’s fishing!

Bauer’s Barbs and BacklashesMay 13, 2013 at 12:52 pm #1170425I fish a lot of the local sandpits in the Kearney area and I have had very limited success so far this year. Cold water presentations have always been a challenge for me though as I have to really stay focused on going slower and being more finnessed. All you can do is choose to accept the challenge and work for them or stay home. I would really be out fishing even if I’m not catching anything.
