I have a 1986 Evinrude VRO 40 hp. The reverse lock is not working/engaging. Does anyone know of a repair shop or person who can fix this in the Twin Cities area? Most of the big marine shops won’t touch anything older than about 2000. I need a vintage engine repair shop or individual.

I would try putting something out on Facebook Marketplace or the Nextdoor app, if you’re on either of those. You might find a small engine repair guy/place or even better a guy with outboard repair experience that will take a look at it. I found a guy on FB Marketplace, he’s in Zimmerman.

I had a 1957 5.5 evinrude that needed repair and took it to Dick’s Marine in Winona. Mark had no problem repairing it. Maybe a little too far?

Crow River Marine in Delano. Terry has repaired two outboards for me, including a 1994 Evinrude. I have several friends that have had work done there and everyone leaves happy.

You could try supreme marine. I believe they’re in Columbia Heights. I had an older motor worked on there a few years back.

    Hansens is good!

Helped me out many years ago with a lower unit rebuild on a 40 and a pull start on a 25. I dropped off the broken 40, he repaired my 25 recoil, off i went fishing.

UPDATE: I got my 1986 Evinrude 40 hp fixed at Hansen’s motor repair in Northfield. I can’t say enough good things about this place. I had called Roberts Marine and Robbinsdale Marine and they said I had to wait 4 and 6 weeks respectively to get my boat in. Then I called Steve Hansen and he said bring it in right away and he had it all fixed by the next day. He repaired the reverse lock and removed the VRO oil injection system. And his price seemed reasonable. He specializes in older motors. I highly recommend Hansen’s.
