Need new reels.

  • #1888398

Just purchased TUCRs: Precision Noodle, Bull Whip, and Precision.

Wanting to buy new reels and my priority is having good drag on them. I know of a couple spinning models that would suit my needs but before I purchase wanted to inquire about inline reels. From what I read online last year, it seemed that pretty much all inline reels lacked in good/smooth drag performing consistently. The new clam gravity/ gravity elite caught my eye, although I dont expect anyone to have much experience with it yet.

Looking for opinions, ideally from those with at least a full season on the reels. Open to pretty much any models. On the Precision noodle I plan to fish only small jigs, mid tungsten and 1/16 spoons on the bull whip, jigging raps and ripping raps on Precision. Would also like opinions on which rods should get inlines on, if any. My only reason for really considering inlines is to reduce line coiling but do not wish to do so at expense of drag quality.

PS Hello to all in the community. Done a bit of lurking, first post, looking to be active on here til we get some ice.

I have the same rods. I have the PN setup with a Freefall ghost reel, I have mixed feelings about it. The drag is not the greatest, to me it feels like it gets stuck and jumps. When it’s really cold out I’ve had trouble getting line out. I do like that it minimizes the twist of the line, and I would only use an inline in shallower water.

I have the Okuma Ceymar 10 with a carbon drag washer on my precision and bullwhips. The carbon washers make the drag buttery smooth.
I like to use a barrel swivel on my precision from a main line of brain to a florocarbon leader. This helps eliminate line twist.

Can’t say much on the inlines, but will vouch for the Ceymar 10s.Bought 3 last winter, and used them all season.Just as good as a Shimano Sahara 500,but less cost.

Okuma hands down great price awesome drag. I got a free fall last year and they’re a PITA especially outside when your guides start freezing up.

I got 4 of the 3rd gen pressp20 Pflueger presidents March of 2018. Ceymar were impossible to find (on sale) when I was looking and Gander was pretty much giving away stuff again, so I went with the newly goldenized pfluegers.

They were a little stiff out of the box, but once I cleaned them up and relubed, I like them. They were all consistent last year. I have them on panfish setups with 2 and 3lb mono.

I have had good luck with Tica’s and even 13 fishing spinning reels.

Thanks for the input, holding off on inlines for another year at least. Currently I am planning on putting a Pflueger Monarch Ice(already own) on the Precision Noodle, ordering a Okuma Ceymar for the Bullwhip, and wait a bit to decide what to put on the Precision. The Precision won’t get as much use until I make it up to Spirit Lake/Okoboji.

For ice fishing line, I only have experience with Trilene Micro Ice and have no problems with it necessarily. But I am open to opinions on line for these 3 setups. I am thinking 2lb on PN, 3lb on BW, and 4 or 6lb on the Precision. Mostly bluegill and crappie, occasional bass, and walleye and perch when I get to travel. I do have a hut, but go out without it frequently and hole hop quite a bit so am very hesitant towards using braid.
Thanks again for replies, any other opinions welcome.

There are lots of good lines out there. Try Pline Floroclear or Floroice. I like using Asso Micron3 line over Pline Floroclear, but it’s easy to find Pline.

I avoid hole hopping with braid/superlines whenever possible.

I’ll vote ASSO floro or Sunline floro. I’ve had great luck the last couple years with Sunline.

Ceymar 10’s on Amazon for $33.75 right now. Really like these reels with the P-line. Great winter set up I started with last year. No more buying “ice fishing line” for me.

Do you see any reason to go with the upgraded washers?

Less startup inertia on a cold day. They help balance the temp from the felt washers. I like them a lot from the cost of the upgrade.
