Hey everybody, I’m wanting to build my own smitty sled for my new otter cottage. I am wondering how I should attach the wood blocks to the skis? Is it ok to just drill holes through the skis? thanks

I used similar to these, exterior grade from home depot. Counter sunk them into the ski. Not cheap if I recall, close to couple bucks a piece x2 per leg x 4 legs just for screws smash

Thanks a lot. I don’t mind paying that for screws, they should hold up better. I just didn’t know if it was ok to screw into the ski.

I used standard decking screws as it’s what I had laying around. Countersunk into the bottom of the ski and they work great. 2 per post.

I used large Phillips Bevel Flat Head wood screws. I countersunk them into the bottom of the skis.
I also attached the cross pieces differently for easier take down.

And here I thought I re-invented the wheel…I did the same exact thing so it could ride alongside the house under my tonneau cover…Great minds think alike!

Did you also make the tow rope the right length with a loop on the end so you can wrap it around the uprights and carry the skis with one hand?

    Craigslist, garage sales, etc…

Usually you can get the for less than $10. Sometimes free.

Downhill skis, not cross country. More width to span the snow.

What do you find as a good height to make your sled?

That’s a great idea. My first attempt I drilled a hole in the tip of the ski to attach the rope to, but quickly learned the skis bend down under load and moved them to the eyebolts on the uprights. Do you run a ratchet strap over the eyebolts to secure the house down? I’ve been doing that but it becomes a pain when moving a lot.

Counter sink works fine. Be most skis are now fiberglass and hold up well.

For simplicity I just cut a 2×6 and laid them flat.

Also cut my skis so whole thing would fit in back of Tahoe, man drilling the skis was easy, cutting them sucked!

Also pigeon toed the sled slightly so the skis won’t get left or right on ya when walking.

Here you go,this is how I set mine up. This might not work for different sleds. You have to adjust the uprights to fit your sled size.
