Need help with apple trees!!!

  • #2203903

I bought 2 different apple trees about 20 years ago, knowing 0 about growing apple trees. In 20yrs, they made 2 apples, 1 in each tree about 4 years ago…lol

They are very healthy, pruned, airy, full of blooms.
How can I solve my pollination problem…I want apples lol

I’m in Zone 3 of Northern Ontario Canada

Recently, I heard someone getting crabapples to pollinate them, is that something that would work

Search ‘apple tree cross pollination chart’.
Do you remember what kind of apple trees they are?
You may need to plant a third tree that compatible with both.
    Sort of a menage-a-trees arrangement.

Apple trees only pollinate with certain other trees and they have to be within a certain distance of each other. Doing the research on that is key. But to fix the scenario is to figure out if your footage is wrong? Is the species wrong ? A third tree can fix both those situations but only in the right situation.
A Washington tree isn’t going to pollinate a Harold 20 yards away. And so forth. A honey crisp needs more attention then a Susan. But distance and pollutants are key

Yes, crab apple trees can be the pollinator

This depends on many factors. It can be and at the same time it can add no value

I would look into getting a bee hive close by.

Lots of good info here: https://extension.umn.edu/fruit/growing-apples
From experience I know you would need two or varieties of the Malus species which bloom at or very near the same time. I also have had trees that never produce fruit for whatever reason. If you don’t have enough pollinators around, the beehive is a good idea.

Make absolutely sure if one tree has never borne any fruit that it even IS an apple tree and wasn’t a flowering crabapple that got mislabeled at the nursery.
