We just got back from Red last night, group of 8 fished Sunday night through Wednesday night, southside. We had excellent luck fishing the break line, 6.5-9 fow. Never had to go too far out. Everyone that says you have to go 3-4 miles out is full of it… be on the break line at sunrise and sunset, get away from the crowds and you’ll have no problem icing eyes.
We got back early this morning, we stayed in a PortAvilla house out of Roger’s. We did horribly in the house, but NW of where we were was a pressure ridge on the 14′ breaker. I caught 17 in 3 hrs, only punched 2 holes and stayed warm in my Otter the entire time. Where on the lake are you?
Brandon, I must have saw you fishing the ridge on Friday. I pulled up on my White Sportsman on the other side of the ridge and punched 20 or so holes with my nils. marked tons, tight lipped and we were running and gunning.
I have fished red numerous times since they re-opened the walleye fishing both open water and on the ice. A few things I have found about winter fishing: cold fronts really slow down the fishing, and getting as far away from other houses as you can is very important. Once we fished a cold front and moved, and moved, and moved, and moved some more and finally found a decent bite. By no means a good url bite, but decent.
We were there last Monday-Wednesday, fishing with Bear Paws. They moved the house everyday and we did OK. Tuesday we were on bigger fish and then moved a little deeper and caught maybe 30 walleyes all under 17. Seems like being near rock was significant. Came home very satisfied and with our 3 fish limit. Ate fish every night. Mostly rattle reels, but needed to jig in order to attract fish. Hook a few bigger walleyes on jigs, but had trouble keeping them on. Bear Paws checked on us a couple of times a day and moved the house daily to help keep us near active fish. I’d recommend them over other places I have stayed up there.
