NEED HELP FINDING A LURE!

  • #1703752

    Hey fellow fisherman,

I’ve seen more big fish, of multiple species, being caught while catching smaller bait fish. The 55″ Muskie I caught just after he missed a sunny on my father’s line. So does anyone know of a fishing lure which imitates a hooked bait fish? With a frantic or crazy swim pattern?

I like the look of both the hollow body and the wild eye but I’m looking for a jigging/ Very slow trolling lure. I not sure there is one being made. I’ve been playing with the idea of a circular swimming pattern.

Jackall makes a few swimbaits that I think would fit in the category you’re looking for. Gigantarel, Ganteral and Giron. They are designed for Bass, so no guarantee they will last in the mouth of a big toothy creature.

Completely changing gears in terms of the style of bait, but when I think jigging lure with an erratic circular action I think Jigging Rap. You can fish it vertically (or nearly vertical while trolling slow, think lindy rig speeds) or cast it out and hop it back. It has an erratic circular action on the fall. Not your typical muskie bait but it does check some of your boxes.

Those lures look awesome but not quite what I’m looking for. Plus $40 for a single lure? I’ve been playing with a spoon that’s double connected on the front and back to make it circle on the way up. Still needs a little tinkering.

This is interesting. How big do they make such a lure?

Largest jigging rap is #9, which I believe is a 3.5 inch body length. Again, not exactly what you think of when you think 50″ muskie bait. But the action you desire seems like it fits — maybe you can use that info as a springboard for research to find a bigger bait with similar action.

I do know that Pike will hit a jigging rap so who knows with muskie. Still I can’t help but wonder if you’re chasing the memory here. Just because you’ve seen it happen before doesn’t mean it’s a high percentage tactic for monster muskies. I have no experience in that area but I have to think there’s a reason why hardcore ‘ski guys are using massive spoons and shadzillas.

    6″ Savage Gear Bluegill

It is a swimbait, so it does the normal snaking through the water. However, like any lure without a lip, it can be manipulated to behave erratically. It’s a bulky lure with a lot of drag, so jerking it in different directions makes it look like a spastic dying sunfish. I can basically make it flip around on the top of the water like a released gut hooked sunfish.

haha I don’t normally jig for muskies, but the river I fish in northern Minnesota requires me to troll upstream for about 2 hours to the mouth of the river. Looking for a lure to pick up my catch ratio whilst heading up stream.
