Ned Rig – what say you?

Haha, I do still throw a Ned occasionally but usually only if the bite is really tough and I’m marking fish in a specific area and they’re not biting anything else.

Haven’t given the ned much use this year. Caught maybe 2 bass on it all year using it for less than half an hour. I usually use it for brown bass on Mille Lacs but that didn’t work this season either.

It doesn’t work very well in thick weeds. And right now the weeds are very thick.

Do you still use jig worms? Isn’t the ned basically a jig worm?

Had this discussion recently with a few very accomplished anglers that said they consider anything over 3 inches (Big TRD) is technically a jig worm, less than 3 inches a Ned, even though they’re basically the same thing..

Yeah they’re not so good in heavy cover, but in lighter cover have you ever used a Tiny Child Rig? Basically a T-rig version?

Haven’t used the Ned much this year. Discovered it all the way back in 2015, and used to absolutely obliterate the fish with them. It was quite literally every cast. Ever since the Ned got big around 2018 or so, the bite hasn’t been great. I still pull it back out every now and then, but it isn’t worth the trouble of pulling off weeds like it used to be. The fish got smarter, I guess.

I’m familiar with a t rig. Not a tiny child though.

If you google around there’s lots of variations of the Tiny Child Rig. The one I like is with the small 2.75 inch TRD since it floats vertically.

I also prefer using a VMC half moon weight instead of the traditional longer nail weight. The half moon keeps the center of gravity more at the lower tip of the worm again to keep it more vertical. The down side is the fish (especially smallies) will dislodge the weight when they go airborn. So I either put a drop of super glue in the weight, or you can even slightly melt the TRD (yeah sounds gross) at the tip so it melts to the half moon.

Then Texas rig the opposite end of the weighted end of the worm with a #1 VMC Neko hook.

It’s not perfect and I don’t Ned rig a lot, but when I do there’s almost always weeds to deal with. Something about the weight being at the limp end of the worm as you drag it keeps it from digging in and getting wedged/snagged as much.

I guess it got its name because it’s so simple to catch fish that even a tiny child can do it. Lol

Well that’s interesting. I guess the part that kinda turns me off about it is that you will likely ruin the elaztech plastic pretty quickly when you puncture it and set the hook on fish. The selling point for me on the elaztech plastics is their durability and this kinda makes that a moot point. I could see how it is weedless though.

If it gets messed up after fighting a fish it usually slides back on pretty easily without tearing up… I may not get 20 fish out of one worm, but usually 5-10. More likely the weight gets pulled out than the hooks ripping out the Elaztech. You can only super glue the weight back on so many times though.

You can google/Utube Kyle Peterson or Iaconelli to see how they fish it.

For what its worth we used to use Elaztech plastic years ago, fishing pro Skeet had a creature bait made with that stuff, we caught lots of fish on those, wish they still made them (if you are new to fishing and are reading this and you find a bait that catches fish like crazy don’t assume they will of course keep making it, stock up!) Anyway I always caught more fish when the thing would sit on the bottom diagonally as apposed to straight up, think it might be true of straight tail worms too, I’ll have to get out there and do more research!

I have only caught dinks and panfish on it. I’ve been trying to use it more for smallmouth. Really trying to learn the WB smallies lately and it hasn’t been helping much……

14-I used to fish WBL a few times a year, would go with Dave who is an amazing large and small mouth bass fisherman. We caught lots of bass including SMBs but we could never target them, we would either bump into them or not, felt at the time that numbers had to be better out there. That said his thing has always been to look for transitions from soft to hard bottom, if he found a finger of rocky bottom over a sand flat at the right depth he would get excited.

Had the exact thing happen today that I mentioned in my original post above – tough bite, marking fish and no bites on Topwater early, or mid-morning swim jigs, swimbaits, chatterbaits. Even wacky and Neko didn’t produce anything so I threw the Tiny Child version of the Ned rig and scratched out 2-3 decent bites.

Sometimes it does work, but still a last resort for me…

I’m a one trick pony. I Use Tx rig a Mr Twister Poc It Hog Raiser or Crazy Legs Chigger Craw in Black and Blue. Drop shop the crazy legs craw as well. The lack of versatility has probably cost me fish, but I do get bigger ones with this technique. In SoDak my brother catches walleyes on Ned rigs pretty well tho.

Anyone ever use the bigger versions of the TRD on a ned? I’ve got some that I might give a try.

I also saw the GIANT trd versions at the new Scheels a couple weeks ago. Is it even possible to find a jig head big enough for these things? You’d really sacrifice a lot of bites to basically just target the biggest bass in the lake. They’re almost too big lol

I almost exclusively use the Big TRDs because that’s what I heard from a lot of people when I asked them how do I catch bass bigger than a lb with the ned.

I wonder if the GIANT TRD comes with Metamucil so it doesn’t get stuck in the package? shock

They’re so big it almost looks like a gag. I guess Zman does make a magnum mush room head jig specifically designed for them.
