NE started the spring out great. The wind we had to deal with was pretty crazy but you have to deal with it. We had a day of rain and snow but nothing too bad. I’d rather have snow then rain, they really need the rain and snow down there it’s so dry. Just before we got there was a giant fire took 18 fire departments and 15 farmers and tractors to get put out. Lucky no homes where lost mainly spread across the fields from how strong the wind was. Our land owner even had us wait most the week before we cleared fences fear of sparking another fire from the chainsaw.

We were able to go 5 for 6 of our tags wish I would of got pictures of all the sheds we found . I forgot to do that. This trip is my favorite way to start it off the spring and my old man had a blast. Since Covid and neck surgery and missing all fall bow hunting last fall this was big deal for him to had back out with a bow.

Nice pics and looks like fun Hoyt. We used to shotgun hunt just west of Springview a bit and maybe a mile off of the Niobrara river. Knew a guy who knew a guy whose grandfather owned a lodge/bunkhouse place that was all decked out in western paraphernalia. Hunted there five years and then they sold the place. Really, really miss that place. Can’t go wrong with that Lil Heartbreaker. I know you have ended a lot of turkey’s lives with that call.

Archery time in NE is great then youth opens up. This year was the first year in a bit we have not had any kids for youth weekend.

Lil Heartbreaker is my call that I cannot go in the woods without. If I can find the picture I have of the backside can see all the marks from birds harvested from that call. Kids , my dad and buddies even few birds ive taken with that call.

We are getting more mix of Rio in with all the birds now pretty cool.

Those Merriam turkeys sure have a beautiful feather plume, very nice!

Sharp white tips! Fun to see all the hybrids and how unique each flock can be. Loading the truck to head down for gun opener Friday. We’ll see if our private contacts are green-lights and if not, public is no worse. One of the few hunts where I feel pretty confident in seeing the target species regardless of private vs public.

Good luck Ganderpike, Yes public or private seem to be great chances in NE. We still hunt public a long with private. Harvest birds off both.
