SCSU the #1 overall seed loses to #16 seed American International? Who?? shock

No surprise though, SCSU and MN Mankato have history there, choking big time…almost like the Gophers epic loss to Holy Cross. redface Faceplant razz

UMD Bulldogs don’t just find ways to win it all, they manage to do it when hardly anyone gives them much more than a casual glance.

I think MN State might surprise you this year. They have some good talent and have shown that they can win even in tight spots.

    Go anybody but UMD!

My son drew Duluth on a board we have and I vowed that if he wins all money will go towards more Gopher gear.

St Cloud routinely does this. They put together really good regular seasons and then choke in the NCAAs. I thought maybe it was Bob Motzko but he is clearly not the problem, it’s the players. By the time St. Cloud played their game last night, it was too late and AIC was locked down on defense.

You should be able to get gopher gear pretty cheap these days whistling

No surprise with them either. Don’t look now but they squandered a 3-1 lead to fall 6-3 to the Friars. frown

They follow suit like SCSU in big disappointments.

Looks like it’s all up to the Bulldogs to save face for the “State of Hockey” college game.

Not a bad choice if you need to save face.

Actually the loss to AIC is FAR worse than the gophers loss to Holy Cross. AIC had never even made the NCAA tourney before and were 31 in the pairwise. Holy Cross was 21 at the time and had at least made the tourney before.
They blamed last years loss on the Motzko rumors. What are they going to blame it on now?

    Motzko facts?

Fact is they won 30 games. I don’t think the fans feel worse then the players do. I happens, it sucks but life goes on. When you think how far the program has come since Herbie got it going they have nothing to hang their heads about. They are considered by many to be in the top 2 of the States programs and I think about everybody concedes they are ahead of the Gophers. Would ANYBODY of thought that possible 10-15 years ago?

This could be a complete epic disaster for the state of hockey if BG beats Duluth.

No doubt scsu has elevated their game but what have they won 1 NCAA tourney game? Overall #1 seed 2 years in a row and bounced in first round. That’s tough. They can be proud of where the program is competitiveness wise but they need to figure out what happens in ncaa every year. I had thought with Larson and his experience at umd there wouldn’t be a clunker but it happened again. They are the best team in college hockey but you still have to be ready to play. They are going to lose a bunch of players too.

We will see if they can reload the talent or if Motzko was the master recruiter there.

I have a feeling they will do fine. Motzko no doubt is a good recruiter, but scsu has a better reputation now than say 10, 15 years ago even though they havent done well in ncaa. Lots of players developed into nhl level. That makes a difference.

A nail biter for the Bulldogs but down 1-0 they tied it up with less that 4 minutes to go. Got the win in OT… yay

Just what I predicted, UMD Hockey wins the big games.

I still remember their OT win in the Frozen Four final over Michigan a few years back. And last year, winning it all as the last and 16th seed to get in the tournament.

UMD continues to be the best overall D1 hockey program in Minnesota.

I’m a diehard Sioux fan, but I have been pulling for SCSU the past couple of years (since the Sioux haven’t done much since their championship). 3 of the last four years they’ve been ranked ~1 overall and lost in the first round to a nobody, automatic-bid team. Who I’m irritated with is Denver for getting lucky being in the same regional as SCSU and getting to beat the nobody team to get to the frozen four…

Bulldogs didn’t look great, but they know how to win these low scoring 1 goal games in March. Looks like its east vs west in the frozen four.

Brutal loss again for my Huskies, no excuses. Hockey is a lot different than other sports in one and done playoffs, I think since Holy Cross was the first #4 seed to upset a #1, the #1’s are 21-16 vs #4’s. Guess I’ll root for the ‘Dogs now!

Their third period penalty-kill was the tipping point. Providence had almost 2 minutes of a 5 on 3, and another 4 minutes of 5-4 power play and got blanked. A couple minutes after the extended power play ended, UMD got a lucky bounce for a goal to go up 2-1. Two empty netters in he final minute ended the scoring.

Third Frozen Four final in the last four years for the Dogs, Coach Sandelin keeps reloading each year. UMass on Saturday night.

Ya I agree. Once they killed off that 5 on 3, the game turned. The Bulldogs had an extended attack and scored which turned out to be the game winner. The State of Hockey marches on.

UMD got a lucky bounce for a goal to go up 2-1.

I’d say the “luck” evened out after their first two goals were called back. I could see the first one getting called back, but the second one was really splitting hairs. If it takes you 5+ minutes to review a goal, it is close enough that the original call should stand, whatever that may be.

Providence’s goalie was really shaky.. Any decent shot on net and he was going to cough up a big rebound. It was only a manner of time before one got by him.

I’ll be watching the game tonight. I hope UMD wins, just to keep it in the state. I’m still disappointed that SCSU flunked out yet again.
