I paid $15 online for the Navionics Boating App US + Canada about a year ago. Now it says I have to pay a yearly fee on a subscription basis to access the advanced mapping features. Am I wrong to feel angered by this? I payed to have access to the advanced mapping features already so…really?

I finally looked into this this year – it seems the yearly subscription is relatively new judging by the angry reviews. I bought it after the trial expired for $10. I think it will be $5 or $10 each year which seems worth it to me even just for the topos.

I think that others have said you can keep what you downloaded if you don’t re subscribe but I will let others who have been using it answer that.

My app store (apple) clearly states “Navionics+ is a one-year subscription.” The app itself is free. The $15 is to cover your first year. That’s my understanding anyway.

To put it in perspective, the Navionics+ chip for a chart plotter cost nearly $200. When you buy it, it’s yours to keep, no subscription.

If it makes you feel better, I paid $45 for the initial Navionics release on iPhone, then it dropped to $9.99 for everything and my $45 was obsolete. jester

The yearly renewal started a little over a year ago. IMO, Navionics+ is cheap compared to how Lakemaster runs their Fishsmart app racket. A yearly flat rate makes some sense with a cloud model of fresh data.

Navionics got addicted to the app revenue and needs yearly subscriptions. Hopefully lakemaster follows suit; per lake yearly is dumb! tongue

Navionics+ is the advanced features of the Navionics app.

I let it expire a year or two ago and don’t miss it, you just don’t get the daily updates they claim are so great.

I get that, I just appreciated the one time fee back when it existed. It used to be the ‘free’ boating app which was crap and then the $10 for US or $15 for US + Canada boating app and that was it. Navionics must have realized they could generate more revenue with the subscription basis. I’ll still be using it, but won’t be paying any more money than I already have.

I’m pretty sure this is only if you previously (at least once) paid for it – then you get to keep what maps you downloaded. My app stopped showing all topos after the free trial expired.

I bought mine when someone here on IDO gave the heads up it was $2 or something super cheap.

    Heck of a deal.

$10 year is more than affordable.
