Just bought a 14ft sylvan for a good price. One thing that was wrong with it was that the nav lights didn’t work. I think the wires run under the floor and I’m not sure about re wiring. I’m not the greatest with electronics but I have installed LED trailer lights. Does anybody have any tips for installing/fixing my nav lights? Any input would be appreciated.

I’d start out by checking the fuse, then the switch, then the ground. If you have a digital multimeter, it’ll make your life easier.

I had an old boat and the live well pump didn’t work. It was a loose wire under the dash.

    Process of elimination.

I start with the light itself. Can you put your light on a boat that is 100% known to have working lights? reverse is to borrow someone’s 100% known good lights and put them on your boat.

Get that fork in the road of light vs boat out of the way first.

    The order to check things

    1. Check fuse block if you have one, make sure fuse is good and that wires are connected.
    2. Check that the wires are connected to the light switch
    3. If all those are good check the bulb
    4. Check the socket with a multimeter to see if its getting power

Is the light fixture built into the boat or is it a light on a post that you stick into a socket?

I looked at it last night and found some corrosion on the rear bulb.Cleaned that off and the white rear light ended up working. Went to check the front red/green and it wasn’t working. Checked the socket. No power to the socket. These are both the plug in style lights. It wouldn’t be a switch if it works one way but not the other, right?

Most navigation lights have a multi-position switch for off, anchor or white light ONLY, and your front lights. Make sure the switch is in the correct position before concluding that you have no power to the red/green light
