I’m looking to explore some new areas this fall, specifically the mississippi upriver from brainerd. How is that stretch to navigate? Is it full of rock like the mississippi around st cloud?

Just looking to save some wear and tear on the boat if possible. )

I have not spent enough time north of brainerd to be much help but I can tell you that it is nothing like St cloud. South of the dam there are a few spots that a guy could get to without to much trouble.

what little time you did spend, was it a deeper stretch?

I just don’t want to run into the rapids and constant large boulders.

There was only one area that we encountered on are trip from Grand Rapids to Brainerd that was well north of brainerd that had a lot of elevation change in a short stretch. Even if where you want to go is typically deep it is most likely low along with the rest of the river right now. Take it slow and go on a day with little to no wind so you can read the water instead of watching the depth finder.

I’ve been on the stretch immediately north of Brainerd up about 15 miles. It’s deep with a nice channel — not much of anything you could hit in the middle. It was much easier to navigate than I expected. The stretch below the dam is much different/shallower.
