Merry Christmas boys! Just got me some gift cards and wanted to try some new line. Been using nano but was thinking of trying power pro ice.

    What’s your thoughts ?

I really like Nano but it seemed to curl off the ice reel. Power Pro on every reel all year. (No I still have Nano on one from last winter. I’ll give it one more try).

If you want to experiment try fireline crystal. Used it open water and in freezing temps it performed fantastic for braid. I don’t use braid for ice so no experience there.

May I hijack and add another to the comparison? Got a spool of 10lb sufix ice braid in my stocking. I’m a power pro guy too so never used sufix. Any thoughts? 4lb diameter, looks like a good walleye line. Does it absorb water as much as PP?

    Merry Christmas!

I tried 4lbs Sufix 832 advanced ice braid this year and it removed more ice from the hole than my scoop . So I have gone back to Fireline Micro Ice 4lbs.

Sufix 832 is my go-to braided line because of how well it handles and resists abrasion. It does get pretty iced up though. I mostly fish from a portable. If I were mostly hole-hopping, I’d go with Fireline Crystal, which is quite a bit stiffer than 832 but resists freezing very well.

To add another comparison to the mix, I’m convinced that Sufix 832 ice line is nearly identical to the standard 832, which is quite a bit cheaper and comes in larger spools.

it works extremely well on the ice for being a superline

Tried Nanofil last season and I really like it. Never tried pro ice, but may have to try it. Agree with the 832 absorbing to much water.

I would go with Fireline crystal. The original Fireline worked ok,until it started fraying.

Most braids ice up fast,I wonder if some silicone fly line dressing would help?It did wonders on fly line, while winter steelhead fishing.Without it,fly line would freeze to the guides and on the reel.

    Some braids/super lines I’ve used.

Powerpro Ice Braid 4# knot break 5# 10 oz. (slow pull 6# 9 oz.)
Berkley Fireline Original .13 mm 4# knot break 6# 12 oz.
Berkley Fireline Ultra 8 carrier .12 mm 4# knot break 8# 4 oz.
    Sufix 832 Ice Braid .10mm 4# knot break 9# 2 oz.

Sufix claims to be the thinnest line diameter on the package, but slack line, it’s the thickest of the bunch I’ve use.

A few other lines for comparison

ASSO Micro Finish braid .08 mm 10# knot break 8# 4 oz. Mfg claim break of 13.2#
ASSO Micro Finish braid .10 mm 12# knot break 9# 12 oz. Mfg claim break of 16.5#
Berkley Fireline Crystal .06 mm 1# line break 3# 5 oz.
Berkley Fireline Crystal .08 mm 2#knot break 3# 9 oz.
Berkley Fireline Crystal .10 mm 3# line break 6# 4 oz.
Powerpro Ice Braid 3# knot break 5# 13 oz. (slow pull 6# 13 oz.)
