Does anybody know if Brad Juaire (sp) still is around here? Sorry if I butchered his name doah he posted a lot in the past about trolling on Mille Lacs.

Is he a guide up there? Website? Sorry, not interested in going to Facebook looking for him.

    Any info would be appreciated.

Jon, his last blog report was from 2018, do you know is he still doing this?

Not sure. Lake regs probably put a dent in his classes.

He was still doing it last year. I did his trolling clinic in August of 2018. I have a friend that signed up with him last August to do one this summer. Brad was already full last year. I highly recommend the trolling clinic. I learned a lot and still keep in touch with him. Brad is a great guy and very helpful even after the clinic.

So his clinics sound like multiple people on the boat? I’m thinking a one on one would be more helpful. According to the testimonials he seems to know what he is talking about.

He likes to do 3 people plus himself in the boat then he can run 4 lines. The more lines in the easier to identify the pattern for the day. He has a program that he has dialed in as far as a process to follow. He gives you a Power Point of everything he covers during the day on the water to reference later. That really helped me remember the details. And he is great about answering any questions that come up later. I signed up solo and he had a party of 2 other guys that I didn’t know that I went with.

Interesting. Is his program as expensive as a guide? If so I might be more interested in a guide. I guess it’s all a moot point until things square away. Figured I would start thinking about this now.

This sounds strange but he likes to start with 2 lines with Braid and 2 lines with Lead Core and the fish will let you know which type they prefer on that particular day. I had a hard time believing that it matters, but last August on Lake of the Woods we caught everything on Lead Core one day. The next day we had one Braid on a planar board and 2 Lead Cores straight out the boat. After the 3rd fish on the Braid, I pulled the Lead Core in and took the Crank bait off. And put it on a Braid rod and started catching fish on that rod also. Until I seen it first hand it was hard to believe it would make a difference. But it made a huge difference those 2 days.

So it’s bumper boats on the basin because everybody knows how to do it?

    No. It’s a big basin.
About 20 years ago I saw what Ron Seelhoff did with leadcore in taking 2nd to Ted Takasaki.
I decided to look at back issues of Walleye Insider, In Fisherman, etc and started experimenting. I think right now I have 6 pairs of leadcore rigs and the components for more.
I always longlined trolled but using lead has paid off.
Just get out there and do it….Just don’t keep any and not at all in July

It’s definitely not bumper boats when pulling lead in the basin.

How would you guys troll for Pike & Muskie in the basin in the summer? Seems that will be the only thing legal to chase.

Unless you can be out there every day learning, there’s certainly nothing wrong with shortening the learning curve when you might only have a few days.

I’ve rarely regretted an outing with a knowledgeable guide willing to teach and share whatever secrets he may have.

When we watch fishing shows (like IDO) wink are we not watching to learn as much or more about catching fish than we are to just watch dudes catch fish?

To comply and leave no doubt with the CO’s will big spoons & crankbaits work? Does it have to be on leadcore or can I drag them on braid? I’m thinking with the water clarity I only need to get down 10′ or so. That sound about right?

Lots of questions and any help is welcome.

Well now you’ve reintroduced a whole different topic. One that you started a few weeks ago about trolling muskies. For now, July is the only month walleye will be off limits…but who knows, that may change? ???

Did you move back to Isle? Just curious?

Yes like a rubber ball I bounce around. grin

I got into blades and crawler harnesses in a big way late 90s. Being a south end guy it was with pencil weights mostly and I was tying, at times, looooog snells.
Often times I’d have a rod fire and all that would be left is 4 or 5 feet of mono snell. There are some bigguns out there.
I’d think snap weights on heavy braid with big cranks would be legal.
The old postmaster targets them up on the north end sand and he is flying along my Glory buddy says. They are lying in the sand troughs digesting and it is a reaction strike.
I have a mast and skis to mess around with some this year

Is the postmaster the guy with a pontoon who trolls? I’m thinking those fish have to be somewhere in that lake between June & October and they have to eat sometime. Basin seems like a possibility to me.

    Thanks for the response. applause

You’ve got me a bit confused (which is not hard to do), but are you talking about walleye or muskie/pike?

    “Pencil weights and long snells”…walleye?

“I have a mast and skis to mess around with some this year”? muskie?

    Or both?

In this information sharing, which I’d like to play…hope not to become an enigma.

Andy I understood him to be talking about Walleye to this point.
After that I think it’s Muskie, but I’m not sure.

Yes the “postmaster” has the pontoon & last I heard still has liquor store in Malmo. Gene Miller. Many of the Muskie guides approach it much different. Then again not many guys left in that game on ML.

Long snells and bottom bouncers for walleyes, of course.

I got into in-line boards about the same time as lead core. Works great on both cranks and blades

The whole mast and ski system I have zero experiance with. I have a S.in L. who spent his 1st 12 or so years in Silver Bay fishing with his father on Superior for Lakers & Salmon. His dad worked for Reserve.
I think the pontoon will get some time with that rig. It will be hunting for Gators.

Yes, I’ll be looking forward to fishing out of your boat. In the event my motor hatched last year. I’ll find out when I can get it into Lyback’s.

Yes, Gene still has TJ’s Liquor in Malmo. Always wondered where he came up with that name?

His pontoon guiding he supposedly turned over to another fella, although I know last year he made a limited comeback himself.

And true, not many muskie guides out there anymore. Just a few left.

So Bladepuller do I understand you don’t think the bigger Pike and Muskie head to the deeper basin in the summer or that not many people spend the time looking out there?
