Well today was my first day out on leech this season, I chose a smaller lake for opener and had decent fishing with friends for a nice fish fry. But holy moly was it cold!!!! With that behind me now it was time for Leech lake. As in my last report I expected water temps to make 60 but instead they dropped to 50. The first spot I hit today gave up 3 walleyes in less than an ½ hour. When I arrived I was the only boat but within 30 minutes there was half a dozen making the spot a challenge to fish so I moved to spot 2 on my list. This spot I had high hopes for but hitting several waypoints that took a couple hours to fish I had nothing to show for it. On to spot 3. This spot had a few boats but being a large flat there was room to fish. We did ok at this spot in 7.5 to 8.5ft of water. I think we caught a dozen before we went on to next spot. We hit 2 more spots and caught just a couple fish at each before calling it a day. We put in 6 hours and boated just shy of 20 walleyes. Not great for this time of year but with the massive cold front we had it wasn’t too bad.
We used 1/8 once jigs and shiners, early in the day they didn’t want it jigged to hard but by the end of the day snapping was putting fish in the boat. ( I have a hard time not working a jig hard) The rest of the week looks to seasonal weather or a bit above so water temps should rise accordingly. I believe the best bite is yet to come. I heard reports of fish being deeper than expected over the weekend and that is to be expected with the weather we had. I do think they will be shallow again soon and in more of a feeding pattern. We only caught 2 slot fish all day and most were decent keepers with just a couple 14s.
