I have two family members that went with undiagnosed Lyme for months. My 23 year old son got it in October of 2018 and my wife in August 2019. I guess lightning can strike twice, even if they got it 9 months apart from each other, their recovery has overlapped.
Both were tested 2-3 times for Lyme at onset and each test came back negative. The thing with Lyme is if it’s caught up front it’s very treatable with antibiotics. If it’s not, the road to recovery is uglier than I ever imagined.
Both have had numerous neurological, cardiac and pulmonary issues in addition to the usual joint pain and fatigue. Both finally tested positive in late 2019 and started antibiotics around first of the year.
My son started meds in December and has shown slight improvement. He’s young and strong. My wife has always been a picture of great health, an avid exerciser and vibrant personality. Although she started antibiotics in January, her system doesn’t tolerate them well and she has been on and off, mostly off medications. She has been reduced to a bag of bones, has lost 20% body weight she didn’t need to lose.
On Thursday and Friday she blacked out twice and almost a third time. We spent the day at the Cardiology clinic. Her blood pressure is very low and heart rate erratic.
She’s been lying in bed day after day in great discomfort and looking so different than the spark of light that she has been to everyone – the one people go to when they need a lift, reassurance, support, prayer. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t look up to her.
At this point if she, and maybe even my son, got the flu, a virus or even a cold I don’t know what would happen.
So I’ve recently put our house under quarantine. No one in or out. Groceries delivered and disinfected before putting away. For how long who knows. They are not elderly but fall in that category of an “underlying condition.”
I’m posting a photo of them from this past August. Sam was sick but came along as a good sport. Kelly was just days before getting sick herself. Let’s hope we get back to this happy place sometime again this summer.
