My (delayed) Leech Lake opener started Friday (5/15) and the fishing has been outstanding the first 2 days of my season. Couldn’t ask for a better bite,,,, well that might be pushing it. However both trips we were able to fill out 3 anglers in just a couple hours and spent the rest of our trip “catch and release” and moving around exploring. It has been very fun. Friday the bite consisted of many keeper size walleyes with not a single slot fish much to my surprise but the keepers are very nice size. Saturday we were able to get a few slot fish along with our keepers.
We found fish on the first spot I tried and also the second spot but after getting to with in one of our limit we hit many spots that did not hold fish so they are not everywhere. These spots (both good and poor) were generally on the west side and we had one good “on shore” spot and one good “off shore” spot. The two good spots produced both days for me and it was a shame I got rained out today. We found fish in 8ft to 12ft and somewhat tightly schooled. As normal for this time of year wind was not a factor and I actually preferred to work a school over with the trolling motor. We did have some wind on Saturday and we would just shorten our drifts once we found a fish.
1/8 jigs and shiners are all we used. Active jigging was key. I only have a couple days open the rest of the month and will be on the water almost daily (weather permitting)and will try and report back each couple of days. Leech is getting allot of traffic right now but the nice thing about Leech is there is a ton of potential water and you don’t have fish in the crowds if you don’t want to. Keep your nets low (and lines tight) or you will be the start of a floatilla.
