My 3rd Lund in 12 years. Some comments on a few things I do not like.

Just picked up my 3rd Lund in 12 years. I do like my 1875 SS. I just want to make the following comments on what I do not like on this boat.

    1. Lots of cheap plastic around the steering wheel and wind screen area.

    2. Poor engineering on the so-called smartphone holder. Way too narrow to hold an average size phone with case. (Also cheap plastic).

    3. Poor design on “captains chair” location. You can not swivel chair to the left without hitting the throtle arm.

    4. I did not buy “tilt” steering wheel option. The cheap plastic around the base of the wheel next to the dashboard has a very annoying “plastic on plastic” squeek when you grab the wheel.

Like I said, always liked Lund boats. And guess I always will. But how they change in a few years.

    Comments welcome.

Since you gave us this opportunity….
    My 1st thoughts were this…
    1.Don”t buy a Lund anymore
    2. Use silicone to eliminate the squeek
    3. Understand that the phone mount was made for the year of the boat. Not your current phone. So change the size of the phone mount to match the size of you’re current phone. that’s an easy fix.
    Good luck

I don’t see where the op stated a year but I do see a Lund 1875 SS listed for sale.

So based on your logic a current boat should match a current phone size, correct? Are you saying the op is referring to an older model boat?

You said the phone mount was made for the year of the boat. If the boat is a current model then yes you need to explain.

    Ok
So let me be more clear….
When a certain electronic device holder is brought out to be utilized on a universal mount or system, the device or holder may become obsolete. Therefore to be able to use the current electronic device that is in such hands of the owner then the most current device holder should be used. Does that make more sense?
What I was simply trying to suggest was to use the the most up to date device holder to match with the most up to date device… Not all device holders will fit for a specific unit.

Unique way to sell a boat. Honesty is the best policy though.

The op said; “Just picked up my 3rd Lund in 12 years. I do like my 1875 SS. I just want to make the following comments on what I do not like on this boat.

It sounds to me like the OP just picked up his new boat. The new boat came equipped with a Lund provided smart phone holder.

Let me ask you, Is it reasonable to expect that when you purchase a new boat, The device holder designed for and provided with the boat, would also be a current up to date device holder and NOT an obsolete one?

I had a similar situation with a truck. The salesman told me there was a built in cubby hole in the dash to hold a cell phone. Only thing is, neither his phone or my phone would fit into the too small cubby hole. Poor engineering on the truck, same as poor engineering on the Lund phone holder.

Just to clarify my post. It is a new 2018 Lund Impact 1875 SS. The built-in phone holder is standard and is what Lund sends out with the boat. Too narrow for “most” phones (my opinion). It may fit if I take the rubber case off the phone but it would fly around and scratch up. There is no option on replacing with a larger holder.I won’t use it anyway because I use a strip of velcro on a flat part of the dashboard. It’s not that big of a deal, I just wanted to mention that the guy sitting at the design table at Lund, did not give it too much thought.

Here is a photo of the plastic holder with two screws. You can see the cheap plastic used. Very sharp rough edges. The phone is an LG G6.

Looks like you could take a dremel to it, open it up a bit more and smooth out the sharp edges.

I think you may find the “Cheap Plastic” is a lot more durable than you are giving it credit for. Let us know how it holds up after a season or two.

Thank you Jon Jordan and others. I may be jumping the gun with my plastic remarks. I will give it time, but I do think Lund should re-think the design of the phone holder.

I wouldn’t say you are jumping the gun….the plastic on the dash of my Lund (2006 ProFisherman 1700) is cracked on both sides underneath the windshield. I don’t know why it cracked but have heard of this issue on other Lunds. My boat is relatively low hours and decently maintained. Maybe a crack or two for a 12 year old boat would be expected, but the dash on mine is spider webbed. I’ll post pics later if I get a chance.

    LG G6

My guess is that the slot was designed for an iPhone which are often smaller than droids.

    LG G6 5.7″ screen
    iPhone 8 Plus 5.5″ screen.

One would think that other manufacturers would be smarter about this and know that 60% of the US does not use an Apple phone.
Apple market share as of Dec 2017, 40%
By sizing things to fit Apple phones they may accidentally exclude 60% if the market.

Am I the only one that finds…I don’t know, humor in this thread? That all the fuss is about a cell phone holder?

I’m going to assume that you can catch fish out of it just as well as any new (or old) boat with an obsolete or entirely absent cell phone holder. roll

Agreed, but the short sightedness of such an easy concept being a big fail would concern me with other areas of the boat.

Yes, it’s a little tiny detail.

Unfortunately the check written (or loan taken out) on such a boat is far from a little tiny detail.

The only reason manufacturers get away with producing less than quality equipment, baits, boats, etc. is because the consumers LET them get away with it.

I think I’d pay a little extra to have the boat manufacturer leave a cell phone holder out of my boat…..

As another member of this forum–and one who is well versed in manufacturing, engineering, and process improvement–has very rightly pointed out several times:

Midwest aluminum boat makers are stuck in the 1970s.

    Bucky has it right, IMO:

The only reason manufacturers get away with producing less than quality equipment, baits, boats, etc. is because the consumers LET them get away with it.

I’d only add that the reason consumers LET them get away is partly due to the fact that most boats in the Midwest are used so little, that the flaws (beyond the cell phone holder) only become apparent after many years.

I was at the Sportsman’s show last year and I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at what I saw as far as alumnium boat quality. I was afraid to touch anything for fear of breaking it. I could literally spot multiple things on every boat that were either sloppy build quality or were so poorly engineered that they would NEVER last a lifetime of ownership without failing.

Ya probably shouldn’t leave your phone in direct sun contact anyway. I’m pretty sure mine’s got hot out in the boat when I set it on the rod locker. Just last Friday put it in the same spot and the battery went dead because of the cold, I think. It will stay in my pocket now. Hopefully somebody doesn’t have a rebuttal for me now. Tough crowd haha

If they are even going to consider putting a cell phone holder in a brand new 2018 boat they should make darn sure it fits 90% or better of standard smartphone sizes.

Pretty poor design and I think the OP has a right to be disappointed.

What about the beer can holders? Are they of quality plastic or cheap plastic like the phone holders? Can they hold a 40 oz can of Colt 45 Malt liqour?

My beer can holders have lasted over a year so far. I think I have four of them. Not sure if I’d want to put 40’s in them for fear of spilling beer. Your standard run of the mill 12’s Work great.

Insulated can holders that will handle the silos without spillage.
