On October 31, 2015 I was lucky enough to harvest my largest buck to date. One of the properties I hunt is a very small piece of land that is perfect as it has everything a big ol buck could ever need or want. I hunted it the first time the beginning of October on the right wind and had an encounter with a group of 7 does 2 of which were old white eyed grey faced wise old ladies. After that first encounter I knew that with all those does in there that #1 I had to be careful going in and out #2 wait for the right wind and most importantly #3 that with all those does and the older ones should cycle early that there should be a big boy that shows up around the beginning of November.
About 2 o’clock on October 31st I crawled into my stand with the right wind and it was one of those days that just “felt right”. About 5 o’clock all the does showed up and for about 15 minutes I had a stare down with one of the old does. After staring at each other for what felt like forever and thinking it was over and I was busted I just stood up out of my seat. Much to my surprised they did spook but not one of them blew or snorted. After that I thought that I had nothing to lose at that point so I did a series of buck grunts and growls. Low and behold minutes later out of nowhere he showed up coming up the hill below me through some very thick cover. At about 20 yards and still in the thick stuff he let out the most awful grunt, snort wheeze, growl I have ever heard that lasted about 10 seconds. At about that point I drew back and he was still coming I stopped him at about 10 yards with a “meh” he was quartering to, but I snuck the arrow right in front of his shoulder blade and put it right in the boiler room. He made it about 75 yards.
He field dressed at just over 200 lbs with a 30″ neck and green scored 156 3/8.
Fast forward almost 4 months later we brought him to the deer and turkey show this last weekend and I had him officially scored my the MN official measurers. He nets 152 4/8. I entered him into both the Mn deer record book and the P&Y club. It was a great experience and hopefully I’m lucky enough to do it again.
