Does anyone have any advice on selecting a quality net that won’t be too big a pain in the butt to carry for long walks ?

Folding stowmaster, you can even get a case.

Maybe you would find a cradle easier to handle while walking?

The cradle would have been my suggestion too. But, if you’re fishing solo that could become real tricky. The folding Stowmasters are a fantastic net. I use one in my boat. Some sort of backpack to keep it secured while your walking or wading would be ideal.
