Muskrat hat. Concerned about condition.

I have a muskrat fur hat that was made from an old fur coat.

I took it out of a drawer and put it on. Still warm and holding together and everything, but when I brush my hand across it, hairs start falling out.

Can someone please lend me some insight into this? Is it decomposing or something?

    cheers

Not sure about muskrat fur but had similar experience with seal skin mitts . Was told they needed to be stored in freezer . Not sure if true or not I just gave up

I keep my Hat on the neck of a 10 pointer I shot 30 years ago, good as new. The hat is around 35 years old, got to have good fur. DK.

Sweat is hard on fur. Assuming the tanning process was near perfect, the hair roots will be locked tight in the hide. Not uncommon to have a little bit of slipping. But if it’s getting saturated with sweat, the salt/oils will lesson the tan on it and allow hair to slip. I have a lot of tanned furs and a few of them are less than desirable
