What is this mushroom. It sprouted in the back yard over night. It has a very strong, pungent mushroom smell and appears hollow. Based on what it looks like and my wife’s comment about what it smelled like, we have a name for it!

False morell! Wash your hands and throw it away!

I believe it is actually a stinkhorn. We have had similar mushrooms in our backyard this year, but the stem was reddish, so I think you have a different species. I tried smelling ours, but I didn’t really notice a strong odor. However the flies were really attracted to them. Apparently that is how they spread their spores.

Thanks Pug, Ravenel’s Stinkhorn. I have lived in my house 15 years and never saw one in the yard before.

I am still trying to wash the stink from my hands!

The false morel has the same sponge-like body of the real morel ecept the top is a hole like this one shown and is more likely to be flattened than standing upright like a real morel.

IF memory serves me well, this is the first year I have seen them. They (along with all the other mushrooms) sure loved the wet spring we had.

I found this one this spring and I’m pretty sure I can still smell it on my hands.
