Lots of us lived through the 60’s & 70’s muscle car era. My buddy had a 64′ Impala 2 door hard top with a 327 with a Hurst 4 speed. Thrush glass packs gave it the special sound we all remember.

How about you? Photos will be much appreciated. applause

My uncle is a judge collector, he has 4 or 5. I used to work on them quite a bit and help take them to shows. I myself have chevelles, a 64 and a 65 that is painted and going back together.

Now this is a thread! I didn’t live through it but it’s the best era for cars bar none.

My 1969 firebird. I’m going to get it out for spring tomorrow so I’ll get some more pics.

First car was a ’55 Chevy 2 door hardtop. 283 bored to 302 with a Muncie Rockcrusher 4 speed. Later on I had a 71 Cuda with a 340 4 speed with the “billboard stripe” that car today is a 100k car. Recently I had a 71 Monte Carlo SS 454. Original numbers matching car. Sold it some years back but just a awesome looking car. See if I cant find some pics.

    I’m a truck guy.
Back in the late 70’s I had a 71 Bronco with a 351 Cleveland. That thing could climb trees.

Can’t find a pic of my 71 Monte but I had a 86 Monte Carlo SS at the same time. not really a muscle car with that 302 in it but a darn nice looking ride.

I had a 65 Plymouth Sport Fury. 383 magnum police interceptor engine, factory Hurst 4 speed. The darn spedometer went up to 160 mph, I had it up to 130mph and had to shut er down cause it was just to flippin scary. It had enough guts to bury the spedometer I’m sure. Take 3rd gear up to 100 mph and drop her in 4th and it would fly. Sure wish that I had that car now.

Gonna keep it as original as possible, switching it over to electronic ignition, and to 12 volt, have all the parts, just trying to get some house stuff done, hoping to having it running soon. Turns over, horn honks! Kids love it. Just want a old farm truck to drive around the block and help around the farm!

In high school, 59 Red Chevy convertible 348, 1st car out of service was a 65 chevelle SS convertible 327 4speed, put a solid Duntov cam in, sounded great, but didn’t really make it all that much faster. Lot of great times in those two cars, if you know what I mean. A few 55 and 56 chevys, but sold them fast as I got them.

Yahhhhhh ahhhhhh. I LOVE old muscle cars, and like you said not really a muscle car but an ’84 Monte Carlo is by far my favorite car. ’86 is damn good looking too!

I learned to drive in a 1968 Dodge Charger with a 383 CI engine. Learned how to work on cars in that beast, I could crawl in to the engine compartment with room to spare. It was Mom’s car, she bought if off of a kid who worked for her dad and was shipping out to Viet Nam. Mom had no business driving that car and neither did I.

I had a 65 Buick Grand Sport that came with a 401/4bbl/dual exhaust. Spent some coins and played with it and ended up with a 650 hp noisemaker that got lots of tickets. In the end the engine had a 2-4bbl manifold that carried a pair of 1350 Holley 4 barrels. It had a 310 degree cam and the heads were worked and ported. The heads had the second largest intake valves of any car, only the 375 hp 327 Chevy had larger intakes. The engine could breathe and when both of the four barrels were opened up you’d swear this engine could suck the tires of another car next to it. The 3 speed tranny got a valve body job and a 1100rpm stall converter hooked thing together. I used an in-line shifter after the tranny got done up. Line lock kept the car in place at idle….1300 rpm no load. The HP went into a 4:88 posi rear end that was tightened up and turned 15″ wrinkle-walls with 13 pds of air. It had custom headers that dumped into 4″ exhaust plates that I could un-bolt and swing out of the way if I wanted to get heavy footed. The 20 gallon tank was good for about 30 miles at a fast idle where there was enough creep in the converter to get about 25mph without touching the gas pedal. I used a blended fuel of ten gallons of 189 octane aircraft fuel and ten gallons of Clark super 100 gas. In the early 70’s this was affordable as a weekend cruise broadway car, but today would break the bank just in fuel. Loved the car and had some awful fun times with it but the cops thought little of it and really preferred me leave it in the garage, but…..well, you know how a some something kid is with a good car. Metallic Sky Blue. 2door. Wrinkles in the top from torque. Windows stopped fitting good even.

I had a ton of fun with this car but sold it before it put me in my grave. Lots of white knuckle nights in it. A Mopar and I were going to run a 1/8 mile one hot summer night. We got lined up and I set the line lock and brought the engine to about 4300 rpm when the hankie dropped. All I heard when I released the line lock was a huge thud and watched as both rear wheels flew past me sitting there on the line. The sheriff that showed up saw no humor in it….not a real good night for me. lol But I had lots of fun with that car. Sure do miss it now. The grandsons would love hearing that thing run and likely wuld be awed if they could have driven it.

Oh yeah, great post. This pulled me out of my “covid-coma” !!

Cool hearing what some of you had, I can relate or street raced several just like them. laugh

I had a number, mostly Plymouth/Dodge. Back then it was easy to wrench on those cars and adding high performance modifications was only limited by your $6 an hour job.

I still have actual photos of my cars, but they’re buried somewhere in the basement in old photo albums.

I found though almost exact pics of same model and color I had.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll go dig out that old photo album? whistling

Tom, I had a couple buddies that had that same car…didn’t it come originally with the 2-speed automatic?

Yep, I have this one :-). Ram Air III 4 speed. Got it in 2002. Been a pontiac & GTO guy all my life. 1st car was a 67 Lemans – my graduation present in 1974. First car I bought (my gf now wife paid) in 1977 was 68 GTO which we still have. Love the 60’s and 70’s muscle of all kinds.

Yes…it was late 70’s when I got into the game back in HS. Fun because there was a collection of guys each with their own muscle car.

Did a lot of street racing back then, I won some…lost some but my nemesis was a couple different 68 GTO’s. Not sure why cause they’d wheel hop something terrible coming off the line, but once they hooked up, all I’d see was their tail lights. sad
