Question for anyone who has a new merc 4 stroke. I have a new 2016 90hp Mercury 4 stroke,
the last couple times I have put it in the water, it has taken a while to start. These mornings
have been in the 30’s. It has the smart start ignition, so I hit the key and wait, it has taken
3 times before it starts. So I’d say 45-60 seconds of cranking. Is this normal for anyone who
has the new 4 strokes, or should I bring it in?

I have a new 115 with smart start and mine starts the first time I turn the key, always in a few seconds without fail. I’m not sure there’s anything wrong with your motor but it does sound like it takes a while to start, at least quite a bit longer than mine. I’d at least talk to a tech and ask about it.

Have you had yours out in the colder weather mornings lately?

I have the merc 150 xl four stroke and mine always starts right away even with temps in the low 30s. Maybe a battery issue or poor connection.

I also have a 16 90 horse. Mine fires almost immediately. I turn the key to on for a few seconds to operate the fuel pump, then turn to start and it pops off.

Yeah, it cranks hard, so not a battery issue. It’s started good for me all year until now. Sounds like I just need to bring it in.

My 15 60hp merc 4 stroke will crank hard in the cold hooked up to a deep cycle instead of a starting battery. If I don’t let it idle for 30seconds to a minute before trying to back off the trailer it will usually stall.

Just a thought but did you prime the bulb until hard?

Stale fuel or plugs would be the first things I’d be looking at. How’s the primer bulb?

No primer bulb. Fuel injected 4 stroke. I’m gonna call the dealer tomorrow and see if I can drop it off after the weekend, then they can fix while I’m deer hunting.

Ya there is something wrong with it, my 2016 150hp 4s starts right away even when it is in the teens.
