Anyone use mud puppiesfor bait? What do you catch on them and how do you fish them? Have caught plenty fishing the river but never used them for bait.

They are used quite often in fall on the red river for catfish or the occasional walleye

Use them on limb lines targeting large flatheads. They can be used pole fishing. They are able to crawl under rocks etc. if that structure is around if fishing without being suspended. Good pole bait for spillways below lakes and reservoirs when the flow is high.

When I worked in a bait shop there was a guy who would have me set the random mud puppies we got with the big suckers aside for him. He used them for muskie bait in the fall. He always said he would take those over the suckers most days.

Can’t take Salamanders (including Mud Puppies) for bait MN per the MN fishing regulations (pages 31, 36). Just an FYI.
