Mouth of Lake Pepin

This may be a really stupid question, but where would you say the mouth of Lake Pepin is? Bay City? Also, to get there from Everts, would you take the Wisconsin channel to avoid Red Wing?

Again, sorry if these are stupid questions, I have only ever fished from Baypoint to the dam so my experience is pretty limited.

    Thanks for the help!

I’m not sure what I would consider the mouth to be – but I don’t think I would recommend running the back channel just to avoid red wing. Yes there is a no-wake from baypoint to the bridge but the back channel can be shallow. I would recommend going slowly upstream on that portion (while we have high water) if you were interested in learning the route. Or follow someone who does know.

I don’t really think I’ve ever heard someone refer to a “mouth” of Lake Pepin.

The “Head of the Lake” that most refer to when talking about postspawn fishing is generally the area up river from Frontenac as the river takes a East-West turn to the area where the defined channel begins. When people refer to the “Foot of the Lake” they’re generally talking about the area below Camp Lacupolis and up river from Reads Landing.

As far as navigating the river now, I’d stay away all together. Even the local guides are taking a break until the water crests now as it’s hard to find a launch that isn’t flooded and the debris in the water is becoming more widespread. A friend sent a picture of a full picnic table going down the middle of the channel on Monday.

Technically the local guides aren’t allowed to guide on MN or the WI side but that’s not the point.

At over 80k cfs that river is MOVING.
It would be a great time to run the back channel IMHO except for the high flow. At 12.00 feet, boat would clear the sand bar. It won’t really “teach” a person the back channel though. Where you go today, you won’t be going in a couple of weeks.
