Motorguide xi5 anchor mode problem

just installed the xi5 24v 80lbs on my boat. First time out last week the anchor mode seemed to work fine. I was out over the weekend fishing panfish in shallow water, and I would deploy the motor and go into anchor mode and the motor would just kind of go nuts. The head would spin around in a circle and wrap the cord around itself and it wasn’t working correctly. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Was it calm? Spot locks do not do well unless a light breeze or a current is present. In calm boat move randomly as does the head of the motor.

Yes, it was calm water for the most part. It was just weird how the head was just spinning in one direction then then next then wrapping the cord around itself.

There was also a firmware update that solved some gps problems. Definitely contact MG to find out if yours is affected.

Once fixed, it runs like a champ.

I emailed them today with my serial number, they said that there is no update at this time for my unit.

Nope, I have only used it 3 times since taking it out of the box. I will Calibrate it next time out.

I had a problem with mine and the update didn’t help anything. Mine can’t find a gps signal. First trip I used it the thing was awesome. Worked like a champ. Every time after that it wouldn’t pick up a signal. So contacted motorguide and I have to take it in for warranty work. Love the motor when it’s working properly. But I guess they said I got one of the first ones made and there were some issues with them.

I just got mine a month ago! I will get out sometime this week and calibrate it and go from there. I will shoot motorguide a call as well to see what their tech’s have to say.

I’m pretty sure you can do the calibrations off the water. If I remember correctly one of them you have to do and the other one is done at the factory but if you run into problems you can do it again.

I calibrated mine in the garage. Doesn’t need to be in the water. Also make sure the motor is down all the way or nearly on the way. This is important especially in tough water.

Talked to motorguide this afternoon. They told me to calibrate it which I will do this weekend. If I am still having trouble it is going to go to motor clinic down in Bloomington.

I had the boat out over the weekend and calibrated the motor. It seems to be working correctly now. One thing I know now that I did not know, is that it works a lot better when you anchoring with the bow directly into the wind. It was pretty windy on Saturday and no matter how I came into where I wanted to fish and hit the anchor button, it always ended up positioning the boat directly into the wind.

The Xi5 I heard is good, but to expect it to defy the laws of physics would be a bit much I think…..

Glad it’s working now. I’ve helped a few people do the simple calibrations, and it’s corrected the issues on all 3 of the ones I helped with.
