motor question

I have an Alumacraft Dominator with a 90hp Yamaha 4 stroke. I am looking at keeping my boat out a little longer this season but I cannot store it in a warm garage so I am a little worried about keeping it out in the cold temps after use. Someone told me I can run RV antifreeze thru it at the boat landing after use to get all of the water out but I am a little skeptical. Any suggestions?

Completely unnecessary. Just make sure to raise and lower your motor a few times an let it sit all the way down for a few mins to drain the water out.

You can also start it up for 5 seconds out of the water to blow the water out. Some will advise against this but I’ve never had a problem. The worst that could happen is a little extra wear on your impeller. Unlikely though because it will still be wet.

The RV antifreeze is for your live well/bait well drain lines. Just enough to see some pink on the drain end.

The RV antifreeze is for your live well/bait well drain lines. Just enough to see some pink on the drain end.

You can also plug your livewell inlet and drain with plumber’s putty before putting the boat in the water. Then pour a quart of antifreeze into the drain of the livewell.

Pouring it in after every use can be tough to remember, but if you forget you risk cracking the drain hose which can produce a boat that’s taking on water pretty fast with no easy way to stop it because now you’ve got a leak under the floor.

Also, plugging the inlet protects the pump side. Just dumping in antifreeze in the drain will only protect the drain side, the pump can still get water in freeze and burst.
