Been plenty of talk on oils for our toys, how about those that are for the trucks that pull them everywhere?

Was a big fan of Castrol gtx in my last car, switched to Mobil 1 synthetic once I got a bigger boat still pulling with the car to do the best I could to keep the temp. down for the turbo. Upgraded the car last year and have used Mobil since, but Castrol was on sale again and been driving that for about a month now and got to say it just seems to run smoother. Never saw any appreciable temp gauge difference on the truck like I did in my car, and may end up going back to it.

I think the worst one I tried out was Pennzoil couple years ago. Don’t think I waited even for 3000 on that stuff.

How long does everybody usually run there oil? Does oil brand even matter? Who likes switching weights with the seasons? Any other interesting lube talk? hah

Motorcraft full synthetic now. Last year, before I caught the Ford bug, I ran Mobil 1. Both around the 5-6,000 mile mark.

    1996 chevy truck 4×4 5.7 269,000 miles .

I have used Shell 10/30 synthetic blend year around ever since it come out Many years ago… I change out about every 5000 miles or so, never had any issues.

Back when I had my 1968 GTS with a 340 6pk @ 425 hp I ran Castrol 50 wt, but it was changed quite often due to HARD use…sometimes every other 1/4 mile ..

Whatever Full Synthetic is the cheapest or on sale which usually turns out to be Castrol. My truck tends to go through a quart of oil every 1500 miles so I push the oil change to about 8k just to get a new filter.

I’ve run Mobile 1 in every car and truck I’ve owned since 1989. I change every 5-7k depending on the vehicle. I’ve never had any engine issue that could have been caused by oil and the worst oil consumption I’ve had in my engines was my Oldsmobile Bravada, which used half a quart between changes with 180,000+ on the clock. I had a Pontiac that 150,000+ miles that used no oil between changes.

I used to switch to thicker oil in my SUV for the summer towing season, but research seems to indicate there is no longer any advantage in doing this. The lubricating properties of modern synthetic oil are simply so good, there there is no added benefit. And in thinking about it, after the oil is warm, 10W30 and 5W30 are both flowing as 30 weights…

valvoline 5w30 full synthetic with lucas oil stabilizer at every oil change,5000 miles.
I use the heavy duty oil stabilizer in summer and the synthetic stabilizer in winter as it is thinner by far.

two hundred plus thousand miles and no consumption issues with any of the 4.7 dodge engines.
I also use full synthetic oils in the trans, differentials and transfer cases.

Hey full synthetic guys: Is it a true ‘rule of thumb’ that once you start using a full synthetic you should not use convention on future oil changes?

I have long heard it the other way around. Once an engine has been run long term on conventional oil, switching to synthetics would sometimes produce a rise in oil consumption. Which caused many in the early days of synthetic oils to wrongly conclude that synthetic oil ruined their engine.

What many say was actually happening was the superior detergents and the fact that synthetic oil does not break down like conventional oil does were combining to clean all the deposits and varnish out of the engine. All this varnish and goo had the “benefit” of keeping down oil consumption by coating all the worn parts and synthetic oil cleaned all this junk off.

At different times I’ve had to run conventional motor oil for a change or two, mainly when a repair required the shop to also change oil. Never had any issues, but always changed out the conventional oil back to Mobil 1 at the next interval.

Mobile 1, 10-30. 4-6k between changes. My 99′ Chevy Crewcab dually carries an 11.5 foot slide-in camper and towes a wx2100 for the most part. What’s nice about M1 is it’s ok to run over a bit if you don’t have the time. Did my intake gasket on my 7.4l vortec. The inside was clean as it could be. Bright and shiny. No sludge at all.

I’m bucking the trend here and use what ever the local NTB puts in for $19.99 per change. I have (daughters car) a ’98 Explorer with 187K and a ’05 Ram with 153K. I have put on all miles on each vehicle and have the oil changed every 3k-4k. Neither vehicle burns oil nor leaks.
